Chapter 6 Crushed Twice
Charlotte hurried to the company and made Jason coffee the way he liked it. When she noticed that the man seemed to be quite distressed while leaning against the back of his seat, she was about to massage his shoulders, which she used to do, but she didn't.
Since they had parted ways, she figured that it would be best not to be close to him.
Charlotte turned around and walked out of Jason's office.
Right then, she was stopped by her coworker, Janice, who held her tightly.
"You're finally here, Charlotte! Mr. Langley almost drove me crazy! It's so overwhelming to work for him!"
"Easy, girl."
Charlotte spent quite some effort to get away from Janice before she said, "I wish there was another way for me to say this, but you'll have to deal with Mr. Langley alone from now on, so you need to be prepared. Well, I'm quitting. Before the newcomer takes my place, you..."
"WHAT? You're quitting?"
Janice, who had always been quiet and soft in voice, suddenly screamed loudly.
Charlotte didn't want others to know about it, so she quickly covered Janice's mouth. "Keep it quiet. I'm quitting, but it's not something worth celebrating."
"Boohoo... You've been doing a good job here, Charlotte. Why are you quitting? You can't leave..."
Janice held her hand with reluctance. There were tears in her eyes.
Charlotte got a bit emotional as well. "I can't stay working here any longer, and I'm quitting for certain reasons."
With that, she felt that someone was staring at her gloomily.
Charlotte was startled and turned around when she saw Jason's gaze on her. Frowning, he looked mad.
"Mr. Langley."
"Mr. Langley."
The two girls hurriedly stood still and bowed.
"Do you two have nothing to do?" Although Jason was scolding both of them, he fixed his eyes on Charlotte.
He was very displeased at the moment since he heard what she just said.
He had never expected her to leave him so determinedly. Jason wondered if he wasn't offering her enough.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Langley. It's my fault. I..."
Charlotte took a step forward and protected Janice behind her. However, her awkward look made Jason more displeased.
"Shut up."
Since Jason was not in a good mood, he spoke gloomily, "The cooperation with the Hoyce Group has been finalized. You need to get the contracts and other related documents ready. Are you trying to quit while you still have so much work to do? You can only apply for resignation after the contracts are signed."
Jason turned to leave right after saying those words, not giving Charlotte any chance to say no.
When Charlotte thought of the way Silas stared at her, she still tried to leave determinedly, but Jason was already gone.
The Langley Group held a celebration banquet at the Tinston Hotel three days later.
It was an incredibly grand banquet since the Hoyce Group's overseas development was no less than the Langley Group's, and their cooperation could be described as a powerful combination.
Charlotte avoided the guests at the banquet and was having some pastries in a secret corner.
"Charlotte?"
When Charlotte, who was focused on her pastries, heard Silas's voice, she froze.
His voice was charming, to begin with, and because he had been living abroad, he still unconsciously spoke with a foreign accent even though he spoke standard Porenian.
Charlotte gulped down the piece of pastry she was having and put on a professional smile.
"What can I do for you, Mr. Hoyce?"
As if Silas didn't see her refusal look, he merely sat down next to her with amazement in his grayish-green eyes.
"Did I ever tell you that you look gorgeous, Charlotte?"
"Thank you for your compliment, Mr. Hoyce."
Charlotte tried to move aside, but Silas got closer to her and reached out to take her hand. He seemed to be giving a kiss on her hand.
"This won't be necessary, Mr. Hoyce..."
Charlotte was screaming no inwardly and tried to keep him away from her. However, she wasn't as strong as Silas.
She struggled yet failed to break free, so she could only give up and allow Silas to kiss her hand.
Since they were at a corner, Charlotte supposed no one would see it.
However, things were contrary to what she expected.
Veronica had been looking for Charlotte since she entered the venue. She was quite overjoyed when she noticed that Charlotte wasn't with Jason. Veronica got excited upon seeing her being intimate with a man in a corner.
"Hey! What are you doing there?"
The music in the ballroom was loud, but Veronica's shouting still drew the attention of some of the guests.
She complacently glanced over at the crowd before she walked to Charlotte and said loudly, "So it's you, Ms. Seinfield! You're Mr. Langley's secretary, aren't you? Shouldn't you be doing your work at the banquet? Does your boss know you're here hiding while getting intimate with some strange man?"
She deliberately mentioned Charlotte's status to have Jason fire her after he found out her true colors.
"Are you that needy, Charlotte? Perhaps you two should get a room instead of ruining the scene here! The guests who have come to attend the banquet are cooperative partners of the Langley Group, and they're not some strangers you can pick up randomly. You need to bear your place in mind!"
As she spoke, she got more excited. Although she hadn't married Jason, she acted like his madam to lecture Charlotte.
Charlotte stood up gracefully. The moonlight-white tight-fitting evening gown she was wearing outlined her curves just right, attracting the attention of many men present.
She was merely standing there elegantly while her grooming and demeanor obviously surpassed Veronica's.
"Thanks for your considerate offer, Ms. Jules. However, I don't pick up strange men, nor would I get a room with them."
Charlotte chuckled with indifference in her eyes. "It seems that you know well of creating the men and room stories, Ms. Jules."
"Hey You!"
Veronica got embarrassed when she was talked back to Charlotte. "How could you say that? I'm not a slut like you! What a bitch you are. I'll tear you apart!"
Veronica was furious with reddened eyes since she was crushed by Charlotte twice. She lifted the hem of her gown and was about to hit Charlotte when she was stopped by Silas.
"You're known as a noble lady, Ms. Jules. It wouldn't be appropriate for you to be so rude."
Veronica didn't expect the man with Charlotte to be Silas. Her face darkened as she looked between the two.
Suddenly, she laughed. Veronica pointed at Charlotte purposely and said sarcastically, "I was just wondering how the cooperation went so smoothly. It seems that... you've put quite some effort into it, Charlotte!"
It was obvious that there was another meaning behind her words.
