Chapter 19 You Must Be Insane
Charlotte rolled her eyes hard and refused decisively, "I'm only required to handle your affairs due to my contract, Mr. Langley. I'm not responsible for others' work."
"You're still my chief secretary now, so it's your job to follow my instructions."
What Jason said made sense.
Jason then continued, "Once Veronica learns her job, I'll marry her, which won't be a bad thing for you."
Charlotte felt conflicted for a while before she nodded and agreed. "Alright then."
Veronica merely focused on the marrying part and was overjoyed. She forgot about the apartment Jason had talked about and her eyes lit up as she pestered him again. "I knew it. I'm so happy that you only love me, Jason."
Charlotte didn't want to see them getting intimate, so she walked out with her eyes down.
When she was about to close the door, Jason instructed her, "Pick a gown for Veronica. She'll attend the business banquet with me."
Charlotte paused and agreed obediently. "Okay."
She used to be Jason's date when he attended such banquets. She was glad that Veronica was taking her place to do the job, which would allow her to put aside her feelings for Jason.
Jason would marry Veronica in a few months, and everything would be different by then.
Not long after Charlotte left the office, Veronica caught up to her and showed off complacently. "You're just the third party. He'll never make your relationship with him public."
"You haven't married him yet, but you're already lecturing me as if you're his wife. How long do you think Mr. Langley is going to put up with you?" Charlotte felt annoyed to hear Veronica's voice and just wanted to get rid of her.
Veronica's bruises were still obvious, but she was desperate to show her power to Charlotte. She strode over to stop Charlotte in her tracks as she scolded condescendingly, "I'm his fiancee, so I'm not bickering with you over such a trivial matter. However, I advise you to know your place better. You can't possibly dream that Jason will ever take a fancy to you, can you?"
"I'm sorry, but Jason returned to the police department in the middle of the night just to pick me up," Charlotte mocked with a smile. She thought that she was merely making that up, but she didn't know that it had indeed happened.
Veronica got roasted a few times, and she was pissed. She gnashed her teeth as she warned, "You'd better watch your back, Charlotte."
When it was noon, Veronica kept Charlotte in the CEO's office, asking her to have lunch together. Jason tacitly consented to it, so Charlotte failed to get out of it.
When she saw the dishes filled with grease, her stomach churned.
Charlotte tried hard to hold back the urge to throw up. "I'm not hungry. Help yourself with the food."
Before she could get up, Veronica pressed her hard. "How could you not be hungry? You've been working for the entire morning!"
She was pressuring Charlotte to eat.
Charlotte felt both nauseated and shocked. Why was Veronica pressuring her to have greasy food? Had she found out that Charlotte was pregnant?
At the thought of that, Charlotte braced herself to have a bite.
Unexpectedly, as soon as she ate the steak, she felt like vomiting. She rushed to the bathroom and started giving dry heaves.
Jason suddenly looked a bit nervous and was about to go over when Veronica beat it to him. "I'll check on her."
Charlotte was throwing up into the toilet bowl when she heard the sound of high heels. Veronica held her arms by the door with disgust all over her face. "You can't eat that? You have to be used to it, Ms. Seinfield. You'll be having such food from now on. I can't wait to see you get fat!"
Charlotte rinsed her mouth and helplessly looked at Veronica. "You're doing this to put weight on me?"
"All you have is a nice figure. When you get fat, you'll have no chance to seduce Jason."
"You must be insane." Charlotte felt like laughing and relaxed a bit. She washed up, not sparing a glance at Veronica.
Veronica felt upset that she had been ignored. She followed Charlotte, trying to argue with her.
Charlotte stopped at the door and turned around to warn Veronica gloomily, "You'd better show more courtesy if you don't wish to be beaten up by me."
Veronica immediately grew silent since she had witnessed how good Charlotte was at fighting.
When Charlotte entered the office again, the table had been cleaned. Jason was dealing with his files while holding his forehead. When he looked up and saw Charlotte, he merely said, "If you're feeling sick, go to the hospital. Don't let it affect the work here."
Charlotte pretended that she didn't hear the indifference in his tone. "I'll get my job done."
However, she still felt nauseated. Even when she was in the car, the lack of air circulation made her sick.
Right after Charlotte got out of the car, she rushed to the side and squatted down to throw up. The big shots behind her all had an awkward look on their faces.
Jason fixed his eyes on Charlotte with a frown. It was unknown what he was thinking.
His partners thought that he was mad, so they helped mediate. "Ms. Seinfield seems to be feeling unwell, Mr. Langley. Let's go to the meeting room now."
"But she has all the files. If she doesn't go, the meeting can't go on." Veronica said those words on purpose to have Jason punish Charlotte.
"Are you feeling unwell?" Jason kept staring at Charlotte.
Veronica didn't expect Jason not to do anything about it. She didn't give up as she kept embellishing it. "We've prepared for this meeting for a long time, Jason. We can't have our efforts in vain because of Ms. Seinfield's negligence."
Charlotte had regained her composure. She tidied her hair and calmly returned to Jason when she said in a business-like tone, "I'm ready now, Mr. Langley."
Jason merely nodded and went in without saying anything.
His partners exchanged glances with each other, wondering, 'Charlotte is indeed special to keep Mr. Langley waiting for her. It seems that their rumored scandal has certain grounds.'
The meeting went smoothly. Other than Charlotte's occasional leaving due to her vomit, everything went well.
When the others were gone, Charlotte cleaned up the table as usual. When she looked up, she saw that Jason was still sitting by the end of the table, silently sizing her up with scrutinizing eyes.
She found his gaze familiar.
Ever since that night, Jason kept staring at her that way.
"You said that you would get your job done, Charlotte."
"I'm sorry for my negligence, Mr. Langley. It won't happen again." Charlotte admitted her mistake with her head lowered.
Jason didn't want to hear that.
He tapped the table lightly, which made a crisp and rhythmic sound. Charlotte felt quite nervous while listening to it. After a long while, Jason asked, "Have you gone to the hospital? What did the doctor say?"
Charlotte replied without hesitation, "I didn't have time for that, but I'm doing fine."
"You didn't have time for that? Didn't you go to the hospital that night?"
Jason's indifferent questioning overwhelmed Charlotte.
She wondered, 'Does he know that I went to the hospital? Does he know why I went there?'
Charlotte pretended to be calm. The doctor in that hospital was friends with Yvonne, who had instructed the staff there previously. When Charlotte went to that hospital, she made sure that the doctors and nurses wouldn't reveal her condition to others.
At the thought of that, Charlotte completely calmed down and looked into Jason's questioning eyes. "I did, but the doctor said I was fine. I might be suffering from gastritis, and he asked me to pay attention to my diet."
