Chapter 15 A Fight
"Please enjoy the meal, Mr. Langley. I shall excuse myself now."
Charlotte wasn't in the mood to tangle with Jason, so she took her bag to leave.
Jason seized her hand and mocked with great displeasure, "You just met Silas a few days ago, and now you don't feel like eating without him. Are you just that desperately infatuated?"
Charlotte felt helpless as he pestered her. She looked down to stare at his handsome face and said, "You're acting like a jealous husband now, Mr. Langley. Are you jealous of Mr. Hoyce?"
Jason narrowed his eyes and said sarcastically, "Why would I be jealous of him? Because of you? That's just your wishful thinking."
"Mr. Langley..."
Charlotte still tried to say something when she was interrupted by her phone ringing.
When she saw the caller ID, she got nervous and picked it up directly without bothering with Jason.
The hospital staff was calling her, telling her that her mother was in danger.
Without sparing a glance at Jason, she hurriedly pushed open the door and rushed out.
Silas was so mad that he gnashed his teeth, wondering if Charlotte got a call from Silas.
He had never felt so regretful for what he had done before.
Charlotte rushed all her way to the hospital ward. Before she entered, she heard an arrogant voice. "If you don't believe me, you can just ask your daughter about it. She's merely an insignificant secretary, so how could she afford to cover your medical expenses with her poor salary?"
It was Veronica.
Charlotte got furious and pushed the ward door open before walking in. She grabbed Veronica's hand while trying her best to calm down. "Are you out of your damn mind?"
Lying on the hospital bed, Renee had a conflicted look upon seeing Charlotte. She hurriedly asked, "Is she telling the truth, Charlotte? She said that you got the money for my treatment by... by..."
She found it too embarrassing to continue.
Charlotte knew that it must be Veronica who told Renee that she made money by being Jason's mistress and sleeping with him.
Charlotte tightened her grip on her bag. She had never expected her mother to find out about this.
However, for Renee's sake, Charlotte denied it without the slightest hesitation. "She's just talking nonsense, Mom. Don't bother with her. She's jealous because I do my work better than her in the company, so she's here to mess up with you."
Renee didn't quite believe it.
Veronica held her arms and snorted. "Well, I'm jealous that you please Jason better than I do."
Charlotte gnashed her teeth. She held back her fury and warned in a sharp tone, "We're in the ward, Veronica, and noise is forbidden here. If you're to confront me, do it outside the ward."
"Why should I leave the ward? I'll say whatever I want here and let everyone know how despicable you are!"
Smack!
The crisp sound of the slap was followed by a short silence.
Veronica stared at Charlotte while covering her face in disbelief. "How dare you hit me?"
"If you keep spouting nonsense, you won't get just one slap." Charlotte looked at her with sharp eyes. "Get out now!"
Veronica didn't do as she was told but charged at Charlotte and then fought her.
The nurse hurried in to mediate. "Please keep quiet, ladies. Stop fighting in the ward. It will affect the patient."
Charlotte didn't wish to embarrass her mother, so she echoed, "We'll do it outside. You..."
Veronica kept hitting her and kicking her, causing pain to Charlotte's shank. She tried to scratch Charlotte and almost got to her belly.
Charlotte's face changed drastically. She no longer held back but fought back instead.
The nurse had no choice but to call the police. She gave another warning, trying to separate the two girls.
Suddenly, the alarm attached to the medical equipment went off.
The nurse was flustered. "Oh no! She's in a coma!"
Charlotte subconsciously checked her mother. Renee's eyes were closed, and her face was ashen with sweat on it. Half of her arm was stretched to stop Charlotte.
Charlotte let go of Veronica as she rushed over to Renee. "Mom!"
She called out to the nurse worriedly, "Get the doctor! Please get the doctor!"
She couldn't care less about Veronica behind her.
However, Veronica laughed when she saw that scene. "You deserve this! You shouldn't have hit me. If your mom dies, you..."
Before she could finish her words, she got scared when she saw the horrifying look in Charlotte's eyes.
Charlotte stared at her with red eyes and said determinedly, "If something wrong happens to my mom, I will chase you to the end of the world!"
Veronica talked back arrogantly and then watched Charlotte's sorry state with great delight.
Just as she was about to leave, the officers arrived.
Veronica and Charlotte had fought in the hospital, which had caused the patient to pass out. It was quite serious, so the officers took both of them to the police department for investigation.
Charlotte was worried about Renee, who was still in a coma. She didn't want to leave until Renee woke up, but she could only helplessly get into the police car since Veronica kept making trouble.
Twenty minutes later, Charlotte and Veronica individually gave their statements to the police, and then the officers handled the case.
The officers didn't know who Charlotte was, but they had heard of the Jules family's reputation. Therefore, they didn't force the two ladies to make peace but told them to inform their friends or families to pick them up.
Veronica stopped her trouble when she arrived at the police department. She also stopped attacking Charlotte. When she was told to inform her acquaintances to get her, she made a call arrogantly.
Then, she said in a sweet voice, "Could you please come to the police department to pick me up, Jason?"
A few seconds later, Veronica replied while sobbing, "She hit me!"
If it weren't for the fact that Veronica was in the police department, she would've given Veronica a few more slaps.
After a while, Veronica hung up the phone with satisfaction. It seemed that Jason had agreed to pick her up.
Charlotte looked down at the table, wondering whom she should call.
Veronica knew that she had no one to turn to, but she still intended to bring it up. She held her arms and leaned back into her chair with a mockery smile on her face. "If you have no one to pick you up, you can beg for my help. I'll just tell Jason about it, and he'll send you home."
"Thank you for the nice gesture, Ms. Jules, but unlike you, I don't keep asking for help from a man. That's just cheap." Charlotte wouldn't let Veronica have her way as she got back at her.
The officers stared at them, for fear that they would start another fight.
Unexpectedly, Veronica said, "You should watch out for what you're saying, or I'm afraid your mother will die due to the trouble you've caused."
Charlotte fixed her eyes on Veronica. She remained silent for a long while before she suddenly threw the iron chair aside at Veronica, which caused a thrill scream in the room.
When Jason arrived at the police department, he saw Veronica's bandaged head with blood stains on her face. Charlotte was also injured by her mouth, but she was sitting aside with her arms across her chest quietly.
Upon seeing Jason, Veronica threw herself at him as she sobbed and complained, "Charlotte hurt my head, Jason!"
