Chapter 5

AMY "Alpha Logan! Your mate,” he blurted with so much pride but there was no way in hell I could believe him. Just because he came out of nowhere didn’t mean I should trust his words. “My— mate?” I mumbled as I retracted a few steps. For so many years I hadn’t come across a werewolf until I moved into this town. I had barely spent a week there and I was already a target for a rogue and a mysterious alpha who claimed to be my mate. How could my life turn upside down in one night? No, I definitely couldn’t trust him but then again, every part of my body seemed to want to drift toward his side. I held onto my stomach, trying to stop the bleeding but it only did so little and my werewolf healing wasn’t exactly fast. I was going to pass out if I continued like this. “You’re lying!” I yelled. “Can’t you feel the mate bond?” he queried and deep down I realized he was right. Something deep down, intangible had formed. I could feel faint sparks coursing my body like electricity. No wonder I felt so ridiculously attracted to him. “You’re bleeding so much, I need to get you treated.” He suddenly appeared by my side, curling his arm around my waist so I could lean towards him. His honey scent descended on me and I secretly felt some relief. “Let go!” I tried to push him away but he didn’t budge a bit. “Let go of me!” “Don’t be stubborn, young lady, we’re leaving!” He carried me in his arms like I weighed nothing. “Drop me this instant! I need to go back!” I yelled while hitting his chest. That was when we heard screams from the town fair — and they were not the good ones. “Something is wrong! Let me go!” “It’s not safe! There are a couple of rogues in that place. They mustbe battling with my men.” “Rogues?!” I gasped as flash memories from ten years ago flooded my head. I had lost my family to those monsters; I couldn’t risk losing my new family. Not again! “Where are you going? Didn’t you hear what I said?!” he growled, firmly gripping my wrist. “My entire family is there! They are in danger! I need to protect them!” “You’re injured! Stay out of this, I’m sure they’ll be safe!” “Safe?! Can’t you hear what’s going on there?!” I tried to break free from his hold but he wouldn’t budge. “My men will handle it!” “I don’t give a shit about your men, I need to protect my family!” I finally flung his hand away and started wobbling as fast as I could. “Amy, come back here!” he ordered but I kept striving forward and he suddenly appeared before me in a flash. “I just met you and I’m not going to lose my mate to some rogues. Stay hidden and let me handle it.” “No!” “You’re incredibly stubborn!” “Don’t waste my time, Logan!!” I brushed past him still grasping my stomach. He suddenly had me in his arms again, causing our breaths to collide. “Whatever happens, don’t stray away from me okay?” he said and I nodded like a child. He heaved a deep sigh before jogging back along the forest path. The closer we got, the stronger the smell of blood; my fears began to choke me, and my breaths started to fail me as tears itched in my eyes. Not again. Please. As we arrived back at the field, my jaw dropped in disbelief as the once beautiful setup had now become a battling ground for about a score of wolves. Property had been destroyed, some wolves were fighting against each other fiercely while others went after the civilians that couldn't get away fast enough. I froze completely in horror as these rogues mauled innocent people. I know I promised to protect my family, but now that I was witnessing it before me, it reminded me of my pack all over again. How they had burned down our houses, how they had slaughtered my people and I couldn’t do anything. I jolted back to reality as Logan gently dropped me. “Stay here,” he ordered in that icy voice he had used back then. I could see so much rage in those golden eyes before they switched to Alpha red. He dashed into the fight, trying to protect as many civilians as he could. The fight began to disperse and I almost felt relief until my eyes caught hold of a lifeless body dressed in a red gown. It was the same one Clara wore. “C-Clara!” Hot tears poured down my cheeks as I rushed into the field to reach her. I didn’t care about the ongoing fight and with every step I took toward her body, I dearly hoped she wasn’t the one. I stopped a few inches away from the body. My vision became so blurry that I still wasn’t able to hide the fact I was staring at Clara’s dead body. Her gown was soaked in blood and her eyes had lost the glow that I used to remember. “Please no,” I stuttered as I fell to my knees. My hands trembled as I reached for her arm. “No, you can’t leave me. Not now, not now, Clara! Please wake up!!” I hugged her so tight hoping she would hug me back. “It's all my fault,” I whispered. “I should have protected you.” My teeth gnashed. I was a coward. Just like I had left my mother to die ten years ago, I failed to do something now. I remembered her smile, and her words to me this afternoon, and now I would never get to see that again. I looked around and the fight seemed to have ended but the casualties were no small numbers. I didn’t even know where my mate was or if Gabriel and Blake had survived. It was always the rogues. They'd taken my world ten years ago and now they'd struck again. My claws and fangs extended. Even if it was the last thing I did, I was going to avenge them. “Amy!!” I heard his familiar tone yell from a distance but I ignored it. “Didn’t I warn you not to come here?!” Logan barked as he reached me. His suit jacket had been ripped completely while his white shirt was completely almost totally red. I slowly closed Clara’s eyes. He exhaled deeply. “Who is she?” “She was my mother,” I whispered, and he went mute for a while as if he were giving me time to grieve. “Get up, we’re leaving now.” I glared at him. “I just lost my mother, I don’t even know if the rest of my family are dead or not and all you care about is taking me to goodness knows where?!” “The cops are coming, some of the rogues escaped, what happened here today is beyond ordinary and questions would be raised by the civilians. We have to leave. Now!” “I...” I mumbled as I struggled to stand, “I am not leaving anywhere with you!” “Our identities have been compromised, Amy. I know you’re emotional right now, but think!” “Think? You look around and tell me to think?! You can go, I'm staying!” He hissed and in a flash, he carried me over his left shoulder yet again. “Let go, you bastard!” I cried, hammering his back with so many blows, but he kept marching forward. “Where are you taking me?! Let go!” My vision became blurry all over again as I watched Clara’s body get farther and farther away from me. I hated this pain, this guilt that burned me from the inside out. How could he be so heartless?! I was still grieving and he didn’t seem to care about my feelings or the cries of the people around me. Mates were supposed to be caring and be that emotional wall you can lean on. But Logan wasn’t any of those things. I would never forgive him for taking me away right then.
