Jacob parked his car near one of these holdout houses. It was a shabby place, the walls covered in mold from the dampness of the nearby beach. He walked up to the house, and it was dark inside.
"Anyone here?" he called out.
At first, no one responded, but soon an old woman appeared, holding a candle. She was blind and used the walls to guide herself.
"Who are you?" she asked.
Jacob glanced at her briefly. She was quite old, likely in her eighties. "I'm looking for your son," he replied.
"My son?" The old woman didn't question Jacob's identity; visitors were common these days. "He's sleeping," she said simply.
The candlelight flickered dimly as Jacob looked toward a room. "The first room?"
