Chapter Fifty Nine: An Unfair Proposition
Layla regretted her actions the moment she spilled those words out.
Akila had told her to stand up to him not step on his toes.
She chewed nervously on her lower lip as Canaan continued to stare at her without saying a word.
Her legs buckled beneath her, and she fell into the chair behind her.
"I didn't give you permission to sit."
"It was taking too long." Jeez!
Where was this bravado from? It would get her in trouble if she didn't watch it.
"Layla," Canaan called her name softly.
Layla bit her tongue painfully before she uttered another unsolicited response to his statement.
Canaan had no idea what to talk about with her. It felt all wrong.
"What you said that day," he began.
Layla adjusted in her seat. "I was wrong. I must have been drunk or hit my head. You were right. I deserved the names you called me."
"You understand that you're standing trial."
"I'm already paying for my actions." She balanced her weight on one hip and took Canaan's wallet out of her pocket.
