326 FRIENDS OR FOES
Shiva, weary and hungry, huddled against the wall of the restaurant. The aroma of freshly baked bread wafted through the air, teasing her senses. It had become a familiar scent – a glimmer of comfort in her stormy life.
As she clutched a piece of bread to her chest, the door swung open and a stern-faced woman emerged. The restaurant owner glared at Shiva, her disapproval clearly written on her face.
"What do you think you're doing here again?" the woman barked, her tone dripping with disdain.
Shiva, looking up with pleading eyes, muttered, "I'm sorry, I was just—"
Before she could finish, the owner cut her off, "Sorry won't cut it. This is not a charity. Get lost and never come back. We don't need beggars like you around here."
Feeling the sting of humiliation, Shiva gathered her meagre belongings which was nothing but the shoes she had on from when she travelled and rose to her feet. The passers-by, a mix of pity and irritation etched on their faces watched her..
