  A harsh laugh came through the phone—the kind of laugh that had no happiness in it at all. "A marriage? What do you think this is—some old-fashioned TV drama? My son was taken from his own home by force because of what you did. I trusted you, Martin!"   The weight of what was happening started to sink in. Martin's hands were trembling as he held the phone. The city lights outside his window seemed to blur as his mind raced, trying to make sense of everything. "I swear, I didn't hire any mercenaries," he insisted, desperation creeping into his voice. "All I did was tell your son he should marry my niece. Nothing more than that!"   "You expect me to believe that?" James's voice dripped with disbelief and anger.
