Chapter 5

Euphoria's Pov "Do you have a mate?" I asked Logan. His face turned steel hard and for a moment, I had to rephrase my question mentally. I did not ask anything wrong, did I? "That's a story for another day. Not today or anytime soon." He said, his voice scratchy as if he wanted to growl out. "Okay." I said simply even though deep down I want to know the reason he dismissed my question and why his expression turned really hard when I asked. "That'd be all for today. I'm very certain you'd be exhausted by now at the new discovery." He said and stood up. "You haven't said anything about the attack from last night... Why am I here really?" I asked. "You're not here because of the wolf from last night entirely. I saved you. You weren't meant to see the light of day after you saw him and I was meant to join him in attacking you instead of attacking him and protecting you." He retorted. My heart pounded loudly in my chest that I'm certain Logan can hear how my breathing quickened. I would have died last night if not for him showing up. "Why?" I spluttered. "Humans weren't meant to find out about us. You weren't even meant to know about us this deep." He explained. "Then why did you save me?" I asked. "I guess I just felt like it." He shrugged. "You just felt like betraying your laws and people?" I asked "Yeah...." He confirmed. There's something he's not telling me, I'm very certain of that. "I need to do some work. Make yourself at home but don't step outside" He ordered. "I'm not some prisoner you can lock inside. I have work and a life before last night." I retorted. "It's for your safety, Euphoria. I had to conceal your scent when you passed out last night. If any person found out that you are human and lived with me, you'd be killed immediately while I'd be sanctioned or worse, banished no matter my position in the pack." He said. "Are we on pack land?" I inquired, fear gripping me. " No, we are not. We are in one of my private houses on human territory. Although it's safe and somewhat concealed, it's not entirely safe. But I promised to protect you, didn't I?" He asked. I nodded in response, too shaken up to talk verbally. "I'd protect you at all costs, you have nothing to worry about." He reassured me. "It's crazy how I trust you to this length. I barely have friends and it takes me years to trust people completely." I said. "Hot boy thang." He winked at me playfully. "Arrogant." I whispered to myself. "Heightened hearing, remember." He said, curling up an eyebrow at me playfully. "Whatever." I said and he stood up. "I need to leave now, you have the house to yourself, this room has an enjoined bathroom. You have your phone with you right?" He asked. "Yes." I replied. It was tucked tightly into my trouser's pocket before I came across the man in the alleyway. "Hand it over so I can input my number for you to call me in case there's an emergency." He said. Luckily, I was still in my clothes from yesterday so I tucked my hands into the trouser's pocket only to be met with nothing. "My bad! I took it out when I felt it in your pockets while carrying you up yesterday." Logan said. "Where is it?" I asked. "Your bedside table." He replied. It was there truly. I turned it on then handed it over to him. His fingers clicked against the screen and he handed it back to me. "Call me in case there's an emergency." He ordered and turned around but I stopped him midway. "What time will you be back?" I asked. "I don't know yet. But I'd be back before evening." "Bye." I said. He turned the doorknob and stepped out but before he closed the door, he looked as if reluctant to leave. When he closed the door, I moved towards the bathroom. I can perceive my sweat with how bad I smell, Logan must have gotten a full whiff of it because of his heightened sense of smell. The bathroom was a pristine, minimalist space. The walls were a soft gray, and the fixtures were sleek and modern. The mirror was large and frameless, and the fixtures were simple and elegant. The overall effect was one of clean, streamlined luxury, with nothing out of place. I stripped down my clothing and added a cinnamon scented bath oil to the bathtub. I waited for the water to turn somewhat hot before entering. I reveled in the relaxation the hot water provided while basking in the addictive scent of cinnamon. I stayed in the bathroom for sometime but pouted when I had to step out because the water started turning cold. I dried off my body with a dry towel, put on a black shirt and slacks I found in the middle compartment of the drawer. I stepped out of the room to eat as my stomach had started grumbling. I somehow found the kitchen without getting lost in this gigantic house. On entering the kitchen, my mouth hung open in awe, it's so modern and beautiful. My grumbling stomach did not allow for more ogling in the kitchen. I looked around for ingredients and settled on making cornbread since that was the only breakfast I could make with the ingredients in the kitchen. Logan needs a full blown grocery shopping. Here's how to make cornbread: I gathered cornmeal, flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, eggs, milk, and vegetable oil. I preheated the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. I mixed together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder in a large bowl. I beat the eggs and added the milk and oil then poured the newly mixed batter into the dry ingredients and stirred them together. I poured the batter into a greased baking dish and for about 25 minutes. The oven timer went off and I brought it out, the smell of cornbread intensifying in the kitchen that I was sure werewolves meters away from the house would perceive it. I served myself and settled down on the couch to watch Netflix. Hours into the movie, the front door opened abruptly which made me jump up in fear. I stopped however when I saw that it was only Logan. If I thought he was angry when I asked him about his mate, the expression on his face right now looked really deadly. The look on his face felt so deadly that I could feel my stomach drop. His brow was furrowed, his jaw was clenched, and his eyes were like two cold, hard stones, glowing like a blazing fire. He looked like he could burst at any moment, and even though I knew I wasn't the one who had pushed him to this point nor the one who the anger was directed at, I was terrified of what he might do next. He surprised me by stepping closer to me and embracing me, he dipped his face deeply into my neck, he exhaled deeply as if taking in my scents greedily. I stood dumbfounded and stiff, completely oblivious of what happened or what I was meant to do. He squeezed me tighter and almost knocked the air out of me. He released me and I was surprised to see his hardened expression soft and his eyes back to their normal color. The fuck?
