CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY THREE – A DIVIDED FAMILY
As she sat there, trying to compose herself, her office door burst open. Alessandro stormed in, his face a mask of fury.
"We've been betrayed," he spat. "One of our own has turned on us."
Joan stood up, alarmed by his state. "What? Who?"
Alessandro paced the room like a caged animal. "My cousin, Suso. He's been feeding information to the police for months. Playing both sides."
Joan felt her heart race. Suso had always been kind to her, had welcomed her into the family. "Are you sure?"
Alessandro whirled on her, his eyes flashing. "Of course I'm sure! I saw the evidence with my own eyes. Bank transfers, recorded conversations. He's sold us out."
Joan moved closer, reaching out to him. "Alessandro, calm down. We need to think this through."
But Alessandro was beyond reason. "Think it through? There's nothing to think about. He's a traitor. And traitors pay the price."
A chill ran down Joan's spine. "What are you going to do?"
