Chapter 1928
The day my mother died, she lay alone in bed with her wrists covered in deep, jagged cuts.
It was her first suicide attempt, and she could never quite find the right spot on her wrist. So each cut went deep, but none of them reached the artery.
I stared at the gaping wounds as the bone showed through and then at my mother's pale face.
She was still smiling at me. Then, she spoke, "Bryce, I have to go now. From now on, it's just you and your father.
"You can't leave him. You have to take care of him for me. Without me, you're the one he loves most in this world."
That was the last time I cried.
My mother took her life to stop my father from completing the mission the Foster family had been pursuing for generations.
She knew it was a dangerous, deadly project, one that threatened all of humanity.
The Foster family had always used human nature to fuel their twisted ambitions. But her death didn't stir any conscience in my father. Instead, it drove him deeper into madness.
