However, her relief was short-lived. No sooner had they walked through the door than Clarissa let out an ear-piercing shriek.
"My earring! My diamond earring is missing!"
Mara's heart sank. She knew exactly which earrings Clarissa was talking about – a pair of exquisite diamond studs that had belonged to Clarissa's grandmother.
"Are you sure you packed them?" Mara asked cautiously.
Clarissa whirled on her, eyes flashing. "Of course I'm sure! I never go anywhere without them. You must have lost them when you were handling my luggage!"
"I didn't touch your jewelry, Clarissa," Mara protested. "Maybe they fell out somewhere in the house?"
"Well, don't just stand there!" Clarissa snapped. "Find them!"
For the next several hours, Mara searched every inch of the mansion. She combed through Clarissa's luggage, retraced their steps from the car to the house, and even called the bed and breakfast to see if they had been left behind.
