‘Nothing.’ Kieran put his head on the steering wheel. ‘I guess it just finally hit me. That she’s really dead.’
I chuckled. ‘So you are having a delayed reaction. Just like me.’
‘I guess part of me already knew that. But a small part was still in shock.’
‘I get that. That’s exactly how I feel.’
I added after a pause, ‘Maybe we should revisit the idea of getting a copy of the death certificate. We’ll lock it in the safe so Ken won’t see it.’
Kieran smiled. ‘I’ll give Captain Rowe a call.’
He started the engine. ‘Of all the ways I imagined her death, I never thought I’d be the one to shoot her.’
‘I think it’s fitting,’ I said. ‘Poetic justice.’
Kieran’s eyes were red-rimmed during the drive home.
I understood how he felt.
The pain and nightmares and sorrows brought by that woman finally came to an end.
Kieran and I were still young.
We’d have the rest of our lives to heal, and to forget.
I texted Conor and Eimile, passing on the good news.
Conor just replied with one word—‘Good.’
