The Second Paternity Test
When I opened my eyes again, I was in a different room.
Three days had passed since I was admitted to the emergency room.
I tried to sit up, but had to lie down again immediately when my head started to swim.
‘Amiyah!’ Kieran grabbed my hand.
He pressed the call button near the bed.
‘How are you feeling?’
I squinted my eyes and tried to focus.
My throat was parched.
The door was pushed open.
A trio of doctors in white lab coats came in.
‘Mrs Valentine.’ One of them bent forward and looked me in the eye. ‘Can you hear me?’
She had a kindly face and a soothing voice.
I nodded.
She shone a small flashlight in front of me.
My eyes watered.
I blinked.
‘I can hear you,’ I croaked.
‘Good.’ She straightened up and said something to her colleagues.
Kieran’s face came into view.
His eyes were bloodshot.
His haggard face was stubbled, but he was smiling.
