‘Sorry, that was rude of me.’ Kingsley backtracked quickly.
‘No, I wasn’t offended. I was just…thinking about how to answer your question.’
I nodded at Maddison, who placed two sets of cutlery before bringing out the dishes.
After she left, I said, ‘Things change. So do people. And sometimes the right decision can feel like the wrong one.’
I didn’t care if he understood what I was talking about.
That was the only answer he would get out of me.
Kingsley nodded and dropped the subject.
My stomach growled.
I picked up a fork and went to work on the tiramisu.
The sweet taste soothed my hunger and made me forget about everything else.
By the time I looked up, I’d polished off the entire slice.
Kingsley was working through his beef stew.
Though he was sitting at a café, he conducted himself with a gracefulness befitting a five-star restaurant.
He looked at me and smiled.
‘Sorry, I got carried away. Would you like some cake? We have a large selection.’
‘No, thanks. I’m not that into dessert.’
