‘I was on base when I got the news,’ Kieran said. ‘Something happened to Kenneth. I’d used up my leave, couldn’t get another one, so Sarah—we were already dating back then—went to look for Kenneth by herself. She called me once she got there, told me Kenneth got hooked on drugs. I refused to believe it at first. Not Kenneth. He was always on the straight and narrow.’
I reached for his hand, squeezed it.
Kieran took a deep breath. ‘I’m fine. Anyway, so Sarah stayed, tried to help him get clean. Rainey was there, too. Of course, this was before she revealed her true colours. Sarah saw her as a friend, leaned on her, confided in her. Until she found out Rainey was the one who got Kenneth addicted in the first place.’
‘Bitch,’ I said with feeling.
‘You got that right,’ Kieran agreed. ‘Rainey has been and always will be a user. Not of drugs. Of people. She was done with Kenneth, needed to move on with her life—her social-climbing, gold-digging life, so she set him up, then tossed him aside.
