‘Conor,’ I began, ‘I know you want justice—’
‘Not justice. Revenge.’
‘Okay. I can understand that. But would hurting a widow and a toddler really balance the scales? Bring you that closure? I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.”’
I swept an arm over the spacious room. ‘You’ve a good thing going here. A business, a productive life. I’d hate to see you throw away all that for a vendetta. I’ve never met your grandfather, but he sounded like a wise man. Maybe you should heed his advice.’
Conor listened patiently, like he always did years ago, when I rambled on about the lengthy background story before we played house.
‘Despite everything that has happened,’ I said, ‘I still care about you. I mean it. Even if we can’t be friends, I still wish you’d let go of the hate, move on with your life. You’ve got so much to live for. I just wish you could be happy.’
Conor reached out to tuck a strand of stray hair behind my ear.
