The next day, after work, Alexia changed in the break room and headed straight to the hospital. Though she couldn't enter the ICU, just seeing Christine through the glass as she lay in bed with tubes connected to her filled Alexia with heartache. Alexia gently rested a hand on her belly and muttered softly, "Mom, I entered an architecture competition. You always said I was smart and could design beautiful houses, right? "The first prize is 300 thousand dollars. I'm going to give it everything I've got! After I win, maybe you'll wake up, and I can take you and the baby somewhere new to start a better life. What do you think?" She'd read online that a pregnancy typically doesn't show until four or five months in—sometimes even later for some women. She was hoping Christine would wake up before that happened. That way, Calvin would never find out the truth, and she could get a divorce without complications.
