"Why are you here?" I blurted out. She was supposed to be at the front of the house, mourning with the rest. What was she doing out here? Her reddened eyes met my gaze as she countered, "I was about to ask you the same thing. What are you doing here?" We locked eyes, and I could not help but crack a smile. "Looks like we're here for the same reason," I admitted. She gave a half-shrug, taking in the yard that had changed just enough to be noticeable. After a beat, she asked, "So, you're here for Alice's kid, huh?" I was taken aback at how she was already in the loop about the kid being snatched. I was about to grill her for answers when I caught a vibe that something was off. Frowning, I asked her point-blank, "How'd you find out about Alice's kid being in trouble?" She hesitated and then said coolly, "This place is crawling with guests, and Alice isn't entertaining them. If her kid isn't in hot water, what else could be the reason for that? Could she be off whispering sweet not
