Bethany went to pick up Elysia and realized Asher was missing from the group of kids waiting for their parents. "Ms. Garcia, where's Ash? Did someone take him home early?" Bethany asked. "Ash is in the classroom," Elysia said, pointing toward it. "He's waiting for his dad. His dad usually runs a little late." Emma nodded with a smile. "Yeah, Ely's right." Bethany turned her gaze toward the classroom, thinking about the vibrant yet lonely painting Asher had made. Just the thought of him sitting there alone tugged at her heart. "What time does Ash's dad usually show up?" she asked. "Why? Is there something you need?" Emma's defenses shot up right away. Bethany picked up on it but couldn't figure out why. She offered a smile. "Oh, it's no big deal. If his dad's running late, I could take Ash out for a quick snack." "No way," Emma shot back.
