The Call
The windows were open, but Yvette was on the second floor and armed guards patrolled the grounds at all hours.
Her phone had been confiscated.
She turned the bedroom upside down until she found an old feature phone in a closet, probably left there by a maid.
She dialled the number with shaky hands.
Austyn didn’t recognise the caller ID, but he answered the phone anyway.
‘There’s a bookcase in his study,’ Yvette said without preamble. ‘There’s a book. ‘Mirror, Mirror.’ Touch it, and the bookcase splits open.’
Austyn listened intently.
‘The combination for the door lock is…’ Yvette read out the six-digit number she glimpsed. ‘There’s a secret passage behind that door. The ledger has to be there.’
Austyn took down the passcode.
‘He’s keeping me locked up at the mansion,’ Yvette said. ‘I need you to get me out.’
‘Sit tight. I’m on it.’
Austyn called Bernard and relayed the message.
‘Are you sure?’
‘Positive.’
‘I’ll send a couple of men to take a look, but we can’t afford to make any mistak
