The Truth Needs To Be Fudged Sometimes
Jesse strolled into the lift.
Kira was holding the door open.
She kept her eyes on the floor.
She would have left Jesse in the hallway, but she had no idea which floor Austyn was on.
The lift stopped on the sixth floor.
Jesse led the way down the hallway to a Class A ward.
Kira stopped outside the door.
It was ajar, giving her a peek into the room.
‘What are you doing?’
‘I…’ Kira looked down at her torn and smudged dress.
She hadn’t seen her face in a mirror, but it was possibly a mess as well.
‘He probably needs to rest. I shouldn’t disturb him.’
‘But you’re already here.’
‘I’m not a doctor. It’s not like I can do anything for him. You’re the doctor. You go in.’
She glimpsed Austyn lying on the bed.
His eyes were closed.
His brows were furrowed deeply even in sleep.
A clear plastic tube snaked down from the IV stand and was connected to a needle in the back of his hand.
She didn’t want to wake him.
Nor did she want to piss him off, which happened the last time they talked.
