CHAPTER 7 TOUGH LUCK

JADE’S POV “He said what?” Hannah asks as I explain what happened during my interview to her, “You heard me,” I reply, tired of repeating myself. “I just can’t seem to believe it. That’s why you said nothing wrong to him?” “What the hell would I say to someone I don’t know?” I respond before closing my eyes and lying on the couch, which makes her shake her head in disbelief. “So what are you going to do now?” she inquires, and I sigh. “I thought I would get this job, but it seems I won’t; I’ll have to start job hunting AGAIN!” I complain as I shove a pillow in my face and scream in frustration. “I always heard that Mr. Miller was strictly professional and courteous with his work life, so it’s a bit surprising that he was so….. what’s the word?” She says, pretending to be deep in thought. “Rude, mean, unprofessional, undeserving of anything good?” I added to her question as a completion. “No, those are not the words I’m looking for, but anyways, it seems to me that he might like you,” she sings, which makes me sit up in a flash to scoff loudly. “He might like me? He. Might. Like. Me,” I repeat before scoffing even louder, “you must’ve hit your head somewhere on the way here, didn’t you? Because any person with properly working ears who just heard what I said should already know that he hates my guts for reasons I can’t seem to understand, and all you could come up with is that he might like me?”. ”Hey, don’t get mad at me for telling you what I think” she starts folding her arms like a newborn, “I was just saying” she continues. “Don’t,” I retort, getting up, walking away from her, and into the kitchen to get a glass of water. “Whatever the case may be, I still have to get a job before next month instead of holing up here the entire week,” I decide aloud, gulping down the glass of water in my hand. “An offer still stands to come work at the club,” she tries, and I narrow my eyes at her before shaking my head and walking back to sit beside her. “That’s plan H, and don’t worry, I’ll keep it in mind,” I say, intertwining our fingers, which makes her come closer. “I’m sorry,” she whispers, which makes me smile, “for?” I question, and she blows out a breath before staring right at me. “You’re going through so much right now, and I can’t do anything to help; I feel so…” “Hey!” I start cutting her off, “It’s not your fault, neither is it mine, so all we can do right now is stick together, okay?” I push, and she nods, making me smile wider. “Come here,” I tell her, spreading my arms, and she shifts closer to hug me; we stay like that for a while before we hear the sound of the door and Peter’s voice. “What are you guys doing up this late?” He questions, dropping a duffel bag on the floor, and I turn around to face him. “Making out,” I deadpan, and he rolls his eyes at me, “if only that were true,” Hannah murmurs loudly as she walks into the kitchen, which makes me giggle. “I should be asking you, though, shouldn’t I?” I say, facing Peter again, “Do you want to know what I get up to?” He replies, turning around to head upstairs, “Not really,” I admit, stopping the conversation. I’ll admit that I wasn’t expecting him to warm up to me quickly or that we would become fast friends, but he had no reason to be so rude to me. It was supposed to be a casual interview where I would say all that I had been practicing for the longest time and hopefully get the job or a second interview. But no, the universe had to make everything more complicated than it was supposed to be in the first place. The universe had to put him there for the interview, and he had to disrespect me for no reason. I have no problem with people believing the nasty rumors being spread about me and my family. Still, it becomes an issue when I can’t even be considered for a job, especially one so life-changing, just because my interviewer thinks I should be judged based on them. Who does he even think he is to say such nonsense about me? He must think he’s some hotshot to do something as unprofessional as insulting my family right in front of my face and refusing to even listen to me as any sane person would. Yes, he might be insanely attractive and good-looking, tall and muscular too, with nice hair and eyes and a….. The main point I’m trying and failing so hard to make is that no one should be judged so quickly. I believe that you can only judge a person when you get to know them properly and see who they really are. Unfortunately, we don’t share the same opinions regarding that, and I’m not too surprised, though, since he is, of course, a Miller. Everyone in their family besides Lydia has been a pain in my back for months. Although I try as much as possible to stay away from them and out of trouble, they always seem to find me looking to destroy what’s left of me. I can’t believe that he also caught me blatantly staring at him, which was humiliating at the time but is entirely horrifying now. He had to finally return from wherever he disappeared and destroy this interview for me when I needed it so badly. I was also stupid enough to think I had a chance to work at Vincleft. I know I’m good at everything, but what made me believe I could compete with everyone who most likely has the much-needed experience that the company needs? I should forget about working in fashion and look for a new job that I could stand a chance at getting. I’m pulled out of my thoughts by a ringing in the background, and when I check, it’s my phone. I momentarily stare at the caller ID before sighing and picking up the phone. “Hello,” I chirp as I can and listen intently as the man on the other end of the line babbles. “What?” I ask, standing up as fast as possible to ensure I heard him correctly. He repeats himself, and the call goes on until he ends the call to let all he said sink in. After the interview two days ago, I talked to a random guy and ended up exchanging numbers within the elevator, so I thought he was a random guy. He is the head manager at Vincleft and wants to speak to me tomorrow at the office. Oh, and one more thing, I think…, I think I got the job.
