CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY NINE – SOMETHING DOESN’T ADD UP
"Penny for your thoughts?" a familiar voice called out.
Laura turned to see Jake, one of the younger pack members, approaching with a lopsided grin. Despite the circumstances, she couldn't help but return his smile.
"Just thinking about our next move," she replied, her gaze drifting back to the treeline.
Jake leaned against the fence beside her, his expression growing serious. "You've been doing a lot of that lately. Thinking, I mean. More than usual."
Laura sighed, debating how much to share. "It's this whole situation with Dr. Carter. Something doesn't add up."
"The human scientist?" Jake's brow furrowed. "What's he got to do with anything?"
"That's what I'm trying to figure out," Laura admitted. "Have you noticed how the attacks seem to escalate right after he visits? Or how he always seems to have just the right information at just the right time?"
Jake's eyes widened. "You think he's involved somehow?"
