Chapter 4: Lucy's Provocation

Lucy looked at Allen with red, teary eyes, like a rabbit that had been wronged, "Allen, I'm sorry. It's my fault that Beverly even hates you now. It's all my fault! I'm just a useless burden, always dragging you down." Allen gently stroked Lucy's head, "It's not your fault. You couldn't have predicted getting sick, but she's being unreasonable, blaming everything on you. Don't let it bother you." If it weren't for Beverly, Lucy wouldn't have wasted her youth battling depression. Now, Beverly was blaming Lucy for a minor incident, which was totally unfair. In his eyes, he had fulfilled the engagement, so redoing the wedding should suffice. Beverly didn't need to be so aggressive. A wedding couldn't compare to Lucy's life and safety. Beverly was clearly targeting Lucy. Thinking about this, Allen's dissatisfaction with Beverly deepened. When he turned to face Lucy, he felt even more guilty, "Don't think too much. Don't let other people's nonsense bother you. You're just too kind-hearted, which led to your depression. Let it go, I'll take you back to rest." Lucy smiled slightly at this and nodded obediently, "Okay, I won't think about it." But in that moment of lowering her gaze, there was a glint of cunning in her eyes. She had won this round. Beverly spent a whole month in the hospital and still couldn't walk. This time, she was seriously injured, with four broken ribs and both legs fractured to varying degrees. When she was discharged a month later, she still had to sit in a wheelchair, being pushed around by others. Seeing her immobile legs, Beverly's hatred for the two of them grew even stronger. During this month, Allen and Lucy didn't come to bother her. Allen texted, saying that Beverly's words to Lucy that day were too harsh, and Lucy's mood wasn't good, so she had another episode. So Allen took Lucy out to relax. As for the marriage between the two families, while the Medici family had publicly stated several times that the marriage would continue, the Cape family's people refuted it. So, as for whether the marriage between the two families would continue, no one could say for sure until the end. Beverly just watched without saying a word about these rumors. As soon as she arrived home, she received a message from Lucy. It was a photo of Lucy happily holding Allen's hand at the beach. Under the photo was a boastful message from Lucy. 【Lucy: I heard you're being discharged today. I'm sorry. Allen couldn't come to pick you up because he's with me. Don't be mad at Allen, okay?】 In the past, facing Lucy's provocations like this would have made Beverly furious and frustrated. But now, the more she saw these messages, the more Beverly hated herself for getting angry and hurting herself for such a despicable couple. Beverly sneered, just as she put down her phone, a servant came to say that Casper was here. Before going downstairs with her ID, the Cape couple stopped her. "Beverly, are you really sure you want to go get the marriage certificate with Casper?" Mrs. Cape held her daughter's hand anxiously. Mr. Cape also looked at Beverly with concern and confusion, "Didn't you always dislike Casper? Dad doesn't want you to marry someone you don't love just to get back at Allen or to save face for the family." "Yeah, sweetheart, Dad and Mom only have you as our treasure. We hope you can marry someone you love and who loves you back. Casper looks cold-hearted. Mom is worried he won't treat you well." Mrs. Cape persuaded her. Beverly gently covered her parents' hands with hers, "Mom, Dad, I know all this. Don't worry, I know what I'm doing." "Are you really decided?" Mr. Cape asked, his brow furrowed in concern. Beverly nodded firmly. Since their daughter said so, as parents, they could only agree. The Cape couple pushed Beverly's wheelchair, took the elevator to the ground floor, and saw Casper sitting quietly on the living room sofa. His dignified and steady appearance was much more reliable than that kid Allen's. This reassured them a bit. Beverly didn't expect Casper to come in person, which was a bit surprising. When Casper heard the movement, he got up and stood, greeting the Cape couple with a polite bow before walking over to say, "I'll take care of Beverly. Don't worry, I'll bring her back safely." Then, with a natural demeanor, Casper pushed Beverly outside until they reached the black car. Beverly was considering whether to call a servant to bring her wheelchair, when she heard a familiar cold voice, "Offensive!" Beverly mumbled in response, and suddenly felt her body lighten. In panic, she quickly hugged onto something. When she realized, Casper was holding her, and her face turned red with embarrassment. How could she have imagined that one day she would see Casper not as an enemy but as a pitiful little animal, held in his arms? It felt so strange. Strange to the point where she felt uncomfortable and embarrassed all over. "What's wrong? Is it too hot, or are you shy?" Casper's voice was indifferent. But from Beverly's perspective, she clearly saw the slight curve of Casper's lips. Maybe it was the genes that made her love fighting with Casper since she was a child, Beverly blurted out, "Are you mocking me? Who's shy? How can I be shy about someone I don't love? Don't think too much!" Casper seemed to retract his smile and said calmly, "Is that so? That's for the best. After all, we're going to be husband and wife in the future. It's hard to avoid physical intimacy. If you're easily embarrassed, it'll be difficult." Beverly snorted, "I know that naturally, no need for you to say it." As Casper gently placed Beverly in the passenger seat and fastened her seatbelt, he leaned in close. The faint scent on him gently brushed past Beverly's nostrils, making her instinctively shrink back against the seat. She and Casper had always been at odds, never been this close. So this distance made her a little at a loss. But seeing Casper's calm expression, she straightened her back in defiance. Casper seemed not to notice Beverly's discomfort and just fastened her seatbelt before closing the car door. It wasn't until the car had driven away that Beverly realized her wheelchair was still left behind. She turned her head in astonishment to Casper, "The wheelchair, it's still here! How am I going to manage without it?"
