CHAPTER THREE HUNDRED AND NINETY TWO – THE CARGO PLANE
They were about halfway to their destination when the sound of an approaching vehicle made them both tense. A police cruiser rounded the bend, slowing as it neared them.
Jasmine's heart raced. "Act natural," she murmured to Sophie.
The cruiser pulled up alongside them, and a stern-faced officer leaned out the window. "Afternoon, folks. Mind if I ask where you're headed?"
Sophie stepped forward, their voice steady. "Just visiting a friend, officer. Their farm is up the road a ways."
The officer's eyes narrowed. "I'm going to need to see some identification."
Jasmine felt the blood drain from her face. She didn't have any ID – at least, none that wouldn't immediately give her away.
Sophie, sensing her panic, spoke up again. "Of course, officer. Let me just..." They reached into their pocket, then froze. "Oh no. I must have left my wallet on the bus."
The officer's expression hardened. "Step away from your companion, please. Both of you, hands where I can see them."
