Amalia followed his scent back to the ship. That’s where it was the strongest, and that’s where she would focus her search. However, the entire trip felt as though it was taking forever. Besides the fact that the path suddenly seemed needlessly long, deep down, she wanted to run away.
He’s your mate, she told herself. There’s no other choice.
Her footsteps felt heavy as she approached him, each step bringing her closer to the moment she had dreaded yet longed for. She stopped a few feet away, her heart pounding in her chest.
“Connor,” she began, her voice steady, though she didn’t feel it.
He turned his head slightly, glancing over his shoulder at her, his expression unreadable. “What is it?” His tone was neutral, as it often was around her, but there was a flicker of something in his eyes—curiosity, maybe, or apprehension.
Amalia took a deep breath, her hands clenched at her sides. There was no going back now.
