Darius returned once more, and this time, he brought electricity with him. Shocks and tremors of pain coursed through my body, causing me to convulse. At some point, my mouth opened in a silent scream, tears running uncontrollably down my face. He laughed in the background, taunting me, calling me weak.
“If you were strong,” he said, “you’d be able to take this without looking like the idiot you are. Your son’s death was your fault, not mine. Even though it was Selene who sent the assassins, it was you who caused his death—because you were his mother, because you existed.”
His words stung, each one landing like a blow. My chest tightened, and the room seemed to spin as the weight of his accusations bore down on me.
“So it’s all my fault,” I whispered, barely able to keep the tears from streaming down my face. “Everything that’s happened—it’s all my fault.”
