CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FIVE – THE COMPETITION GETS TOUGH
"Remember when we tried to bake Dad's birthday cake when we were kids?" she reminisced. "And we used salt instead of sugar?"
Nancy chuckled despite her stress. "Oh God, I'd almost forgotten about that. Poor Dad tried so hard to pretend he liked it."
"See?" Rebecca said, nudging her sister. "If we could survive that baking disaster, we can handle anything."
Their moment of levity was interrupted by a loud crash. They turned to see that one of Nancy's cake stands had toppled over, sending a beautifully decorated cake tumbling to the floor.
"No!" Nancy cried, dropping to her knees beside the ruined cake.
Rebecca knelt beside her, surveying the damage. "Okay, this looks bad, but I think we can salvage it."
She carefully scooped up the cake pieces, piling them into a bowl. "What if we turn this into a trifle? We can layer it with some of your leftover frosting and maybe some fruit?"
Nancy looked skeptical. "A trifle? In a baking competition?"
