Lizzie’s POV
Impatience clawed at me, gnawing at my nerves as I sat in the sterile, white-washed hospital room. The smell of disinfectant hung in the air, making me feel nauseous, and the harsh fluorescent lights above hummed in an irritating, constant buzz.
Dr. Richardson, a tall, bespectacled man with thinning gray hair, had been hovering around Emma's bedside for what felt like an eternity, his eyes darting between monitors and medical equipment.
I couldn't stand the waiting any longer. My patience was running thin because of this dimwit I gave birth to, and the remaining had dwindled to nothing. "Doctor, for God's sake, how is she?" I snapped, my tone dripping with arrogance. The doctor glanced up at me, his expression momentarily hardening before he composed himself.
"Calm down, Mrs. Lizzie," he said, his voice low and steady as if trying to calm a volatile beast. And I didn’t miss the way he avoided calling me Mrs. Hawthorne. They all think I didn’t know why me and Emma were neve
