Chapter 9 Make A Bet
I could not tell what he was thinking about, so I just nodded and agreed.
Sometimes, people would be humble for no reason. I seemed to have gotten used to Curtis' requests. Therefore, I would always obey them even if I wanted to resist them.
The car drove toward the city. At first, I thought Curtis would send me back to the villa, but he brought me to the hospital instead.
The smell of the disinfectant spread throughout every corner of the hospital, which I did not like. However, all I could do was follow Curtis as he went into Anna’s ward.
Anna was getting a drip infusion. She was weak from the start, so she looked even weaker as she was lying on the plain white bed with her eyes barely open.
Seeing that Curtis and I walked in together, Anna’s eyes became colder as she glanced at me. After some time, she looked at Curtis and said, “I don’t want to see her!”
It seemed as if her gentle, cute attitude had gone missing since she lost her child. She had become a little colder and spiteful.
Curtis walked toward her and lifted her from the bed. He rubbed his chin against her forehead and comforted her. “Let her take care of you for a few days. It’s what she should do.”
This intimate, lovey-dovey scene hurt my head.
At first, Anna wanted to say something about it, but she just looked up at Curtis and said with a smile instead, “Okay, I’ll follow what you say!”
Their short conversation had decided whether I would stay or leave.
It may sound ridiculous, but I ended up going with their arrangement without saying a word.
Curtis was very busy and did not show up at Master Blake’s funeral. Nonetheless, he was still from the Blake family, so tons of matters had to go through his hands.
It seemed that the only one who could stay to take care of her was me.
2:00 AM, Anna had slept too much during the day, so she could not fall asleep at night. There were no extra beds in the hospital, so I could only sit on the armchair next to the bed.
Seeing that I had not slept, Anna looked at me and said, “Julia, you’re too humble.”
Upon hearing this, I did not know what to say. I just looked down at the ring on my finger. After some time, I looked up at her and said, “Isn’t that what love is?”
For some reason, Anna smiled. After some time, she said, “Are you tired?”
I shook my head. What was there in our short lives that was not tiring? All I did was just fall in love with someone.
“Can you pour me a glass of water?” Anna said as she supported herself to get up a little.
I nodded and got up to pour some water for her.
“Don’t add any cold water. I want it hot!” Anna said without much emotion.
After pouring the water, I passed it to her, but she did not take it. Instead, she looked at me and said, “I think that you’re pitiful, but I also think that you’re pathetic. What happened to the child shouldn’t be blamed on you, but I still couldn’t help but push all of the responsibility and hatred on you.”
I did not know what Anna was trying to say, so I just passed her the water. “Be careful. It’s hot!”
Anna took the glass and grabbed onto me. Instinctively, I wanted to withdraw my hand. Her dark eyes then stared at me, and she said, “Let’s make a bet and see whether he’ll feel bad for you.”
I was taken aback as I saw the man standing by the door from the corner of my eyes. Who knew when he came in? Anna looked at me with a calm expression. “Do you dare?”
I did not say anything and just let her pour the hot water down the back of my hand. It was a piercing pain, like getting bitten by ten thousand ants at once.
Although I did not say anything, I had already participated in this bet.
Anna put down the glass of water and said innocently, “I’m sorry, I didn’t do it on purpose. The glass was too hot, so I accidentally spilled it. Are you alright?”
Her words sounded so fake.
I withdrew my hand and shook my head while enduring the pain. “I’m fine!”’
