Chapter 4: Urgent Matter
Nancy fell silent in the face of Daniel's indifferent expression. He was telling the truth.
Within a week of being together, Daniel began to frequently change the women around him, except for Nancy.
They were all fiery, lively, and seductive... completely different from Nancy.
But the girl he chose this time, Blanche, was obedient and innocent, like a newly blossomed flower.
Especially with those innocent big eyes of hers, it really softened people's hearts.
Nancy turned her head away, refusing to look at him anymore.
Daniel instructed the driver to pull over on the side of the road and told Nancy to get out, "I'll drop you off here, it's not on my way. You can take a taxi."
Nancy nodded and got out of the car, watching it drive off into the distance. She turned back and walked towards the venue; her car was still parked there.
She hailed a taxi and called for a designated driver, then finally got in the car to go home.
Looking at the familiar yet unfamiliar scenery outside the window, Nancy felt a bit lost. In two months, she would have been with Daniel for ten years.
She had been by his side since she interned at eighteen.
But now she understood, they were just in a superior-subordinate relationship, or rather, she was just someone he occasionally satisfied his desires with, especially since Blanche was still too young for him to fully commit.
Nancy knew deep down that soon enough, Daniel would just be her boss.
The next day, Nancy forced herself to go to the office despite a headache. The consecutive overtime had taken a toll on her body.
But an hour had passed, and Blanche still hadn't shown up for work.
Nancy called her, but she didn't answer.
Nancy was busy. As Daniel's assistant, she had to handle trivial matters efficiently because Daniel's time was precious.
She organized all the files and then knocked on Daniel's office door.
"Come in."
Daniel's voice sounded somewhat gentle, which surprised Nancy.
She pushed open the door and saw Blanche sitting next to him, quietly eating breakfast. No wonder he had pulled down the blinds.
Looking at the somewhat greasy burger and fruit covered in salad dressing, Nancy wanted to remind Blanche that Daniel didn't like these things. He didn't even have the habit of eating breakfast; he just had a cup of black coffee every morning.
But Daniel grabbed the burger and took a big bite with no hesitation, "It's good, very tasty."
No wonder his voice had been so gentle earlier, it was because of Blanche. This breakfast was made by her hands.
Blushing, Blanche looked at him with joy, "I'll make you breakfast every day from now on. I can't help you much at banquets, but I can do this."
She looked embarrassedly at Nancy, wanting to get up, but Daniel directly held her down.
"Is there something?" His tone towards Nancy was noticeably colder.
Nancy lowered her eyes and placed the documents she had in her hand on the table, "These are the lists of potential cooperation from yesterday's banquet, the ongoing projects of various companies, and the corresponding data summaries."
Then Nancy proficiently took out her tablet and began to report on Daniel's schedule for the day. Finally, she said, "This afternoon, the representatives from Namei hope to meet with you. They've made an appointment for three o'clock at Namei Group."
Namei was the most important partner, and Daniel leaving early from yesterday's banquet had already upset them. This time, there couldn't be any mistakes.
Blanche, on the side, seemed a bit at a loss. Her eyes welled up again, and she nervously bit her lip.
Daniel squeezed her hand, smiled at her, and Blanche's emotions eased a bit. Only then did he wave to Nancy, "Got it. Blanche will accompany me this afternoon, you go prepare the car."
Nancy turned around directly, but she heard him say from behind, "You'll be in charge of organizing these documents from now on. Let Blanche and me report to you."
"Yes, sir." Nancy's tone was calm as she pushed the door and left.
Daniel had told her last night that she was being too excellent, which made Blanche feel inferior.
Last night, news of Blanche attending the banquet with Daniel had spread throughout the company. While Nancy was in the restroom, she overheard a lot of gossip.
"What's so good about Blanche? I really don't understand what Daniel is thinking."
"Nowadays, men are into innocent little flowers like her."
"Is Nancy going to step down? I always thought she would be the boss lady."
Nancy stepped out of the door, and when those people saw her, they immediately shut their mouths, pretending like they hadn't said anything.
She pretended not to have heard anything and continued on her way.
She was his subordinate; she just needed to do her job as his assistant well.
In the afternoon, while Nancy was in a meeting in the marketing department, her phone kept ringing. Seeing it was Anna, the representative from Namei, she quickly excused herself and left the meeting room.
Seeing that it was already three thirty in the afternoon, Nancy had a bad feeling. "Miss Anna."
"Nancy, your company doesn't seem to value this cooperation, do they?" Anna's voice was icy and tinged with anger, "I've been waiting in the meeting room for half an hour, why haven't you and Daniel shown up yet?"
Nancy immediately realized what had happened and replied, "I'm very sorry, we just came back from inspecting a rural construction site, and the car broke down. We're looking for another car and will be there right away."
Anna didn't inquire further if this was an excuse, she just urged Nancy to hurry up.
After hanging up the phone, Nancy frantically tried to call Daniel, but he didn't answer either his work phone or his personal phone. Nancy was getting desperate, and finally, she reluctantly called Blanche.
"Nancy sister." Blanche's voice came through, sounding choked up.
Nancy's heart skipped a beat, and she immediately steadied herself, "Blanche, where are you? Where's Mr.?"
"Mr. Mr. went to buy sanitary pads and hot drinks for me." Blanche's voice was tinged with embarrassment, "I... I got my period, and my stomach hurts."
Nancy took a deep breath, trying to suppress the anger in her chest, "Blanche, is it serious? Do you need to go to the hospital?"
"No, no need to go to the hospital, I just need to rest for a while."
"Blanche, you know, Mr. and the Namei representative had an appointment at three o'clock this afternoon." Nancy patiently continued.
"Ah? Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot, it's all my fault, I'm sorry." Blanche started crying, continuously apologizing over the phone.
Nancy was starting to get impatient, "Enough with the apologies now..."
"Why should she apologize? Nancy, don't be too much." Daniel's voice suddenly appeared on the phone, along with Blanche's soft sobs.
Nancy felt her emotions becoming uncontrollable, but in the end, reason overcame negative emotions, "Sir, you and the Namei representative had an appointment at
three o'clock."
"You go handle it, say I have something urgent and can't make it." The phone was hung up, leaving Nancy standing quietly in the corridor.
People from the marketing department came out and called for her, and only then did she come back to her senses, smiling apologetically, "Sorry, can you help me organize the files? I'll look at them when I come back."
Namei was Lirang's biggest partner, and Nancy couldn't keep Anna waiting too long.
But Anna wasn't someone to be trifled with, so Nancy quickly changed into a black professional suit, messed up her hair a bit, and thought about how to handle the situation.
