Chapter 5: Some People Aren't Worth It

"Miss Anna, I'm very sorry for keeping you waiting for so long." Nancy looked disheveled, which softened Anna's anger a bit. Anna turned to her assistant, "Go get Miss Nancy a cup of coffee and a towel." "Daniel is really heartless, making you go to a construction site?" Nancy thanked Anna quietly, not mentioning Daniel. Luckily, Anna didn't press further. Nancy had already prepared the details of the next two cooperation projects. On the way, she had reviewed them multiple times and could discuss them confidently with Anna. Even Anna's assistant nodded in admiration. "Miss Anna, are you satisfied with the details of the cooperation projects for the next quarter?" Nancy smiled warmly. Anna raised an eyebrow, "Nancy, you're excellent. Daniel is really blind." Her words made Nancy pause. Both of them knew Daniel wouldn't show up, so they didn't bring it up. Before leaving, Anna stopped Nancy, "My colleague saw Daniel at the supermarket... buying sanitary pads." "People make mistakes. Perhaps your colleague saw wrong." After following Daniel for many years, Nancy knew how to handle these situations. Anna looked at her intently, then smiled, "Maybe. But do you want to consider changing jobs? Consider Namei?" "No need to rush for an answer, think about it seriously. I just want to remind you, some people aren't worth it." Nancy politely smiled but didn't respond. When she left Namei, she felt like her back was soaked with sweat. When the phone rang, seeing it was Gaia, Nancy reluctantly answered. "What are you doing? Why isn't Daniel picking up the phone?" Gaia, Daniel's sister, never liked Nancy, and her impatience mirrored Daniel's. Without waiting for Nancy's reply, Gaia hung up and sent the hospital address. Nancy hesitated but decided to call Daniel's private number. This time, Blanche answered, "Nancy sister." Daniel's private number was off-limits to everyone except Nancy and his family. But now, Blanche answered the phone. Nancy's heart skipped a beat, but she quickly said, "Please tell Mr. that his grandmother's condition has worsened, and his sister wants us to come to the hospital." Blanche seemed to choke up, then the voice on the other end changed, "You don't need to tell me about this. Just go." "Okay, sir." This time, Nancy hung up first and hailed a cab to the hospital. Nancy didn't want to see Daniel's family. Everyone knew she was Daniel's person, including his family. When Gaia first met her, she mocked her openly and even locked her in the attic for a whole night. Daniel found her scared and sleepless all night. Gaia casually blamed Nancy for wandering around, not taking any responsibility for her actions. Daniel, who had always been close to his sister, didn't blame her either. Their sibling relationship wasn't good, but it didn't affect their family bond. But Daniel's grandmother, Cindy, liked Nancy a lot and often defended her at family gatherings. Daniel used to respect his grandmother, who raised him, but now, for Blanche's sake, he ignored even his hospitalized grandmother. When they arrived at the hospital, Cindy had regained consciousness, but she was still weak. Over the years, her heart condition had worsened. "Where is he? Why are you alone?" Gaia impatiently looked at Nancy, not hiding her annoyance. Cindy weakly reached out her hand, and Nancy quickly walked to her bedside, holding her hand, "Grandma, I'm here. Daniel has an important meeting, but he'll come to see you as soon as he's done, okay?" Cindy nodded weakly and pointed to her bag. Reluctantly, Gaia took out an invitation card from it. "It's the Earl's birthday invitation. Daniel is supposed to represent the family. You're coming too." Nancy was a bit excited holding the invitation. Although the royals no longer held real power, the upper-class circles were still exclusive. The Earl's birthday party would be attended not only by royalty but also by prominent families from various circles. With the invitation in hand, Nancy decided to go see Daniel. An assistant couldn't attend such a high-level event alone. This time, Daniel answered his own phone and told Nancy to go directly to the villa. In the ten years, Nancy had only been to his private villa three times, and each time, she left immediately afterward, sent away by the driver. Standing in front of the villa, Nancy felt a bit dazed. The last time she had been here was three years ago, like a lifetime ago. She rang the doorbell, and Blanche opened the door. She was wearing a pink bunny pajamas and holding a hot water bottle, her face pale. "Nancy, come in." Nancy hesitated at the door. Blanche explained instinctively, "Don't get the wrong idea. I'm just not feeling well, and Daniel asked me to rest here for a while." Daniel's private property never allowed outsiders in. Even Nancy hadn't rested here before, let alone had her own pajamas here. "Come in and close the door. Blanche shouldn't catch a cold." Daniel carried a cup of hot milk and handed it to Blanche, then hugged her back to the living room. He reminded her carefully, "Be careful, it's hot. Drink it later." When he turned to Nancy, he resumed his business-like demeanor, "The invitation?" Nancy respectfully handed over the invitation. Then Daniel asked about his grandmother's condition, "How is grandma? Her old problem?" "Yes, the doctor asked her to stay in the hospital for observation for a week. I told her you're busy but will come to see her when you can." Nancy mechanically replied, but Daniel didn't seem moved. Instead, Blanche's eyes turned red again, and tears streamed down her face as she continued to fiddle with the edge of the cup. Nancy didn't understand why this girl cried so easily. She always thought Daniel didn't like emotional women. She shook her head gently, regaining her focus, "Daniel, Gaia wants us to go together to the Earl's birthday." "How should we choose the Earl's birthday gift? And the dress? Should we have a brand send a ready-made one, or should we have one custom-made?" "Oops!" The milk in Blanche's hand spilled all over the floor. She held her hand, and tears welled up again. "Is it too hot? Does it hurt?" Daniel picked her up and hurried to the kitchen, then carefully helped her wash her hand. Nancy watched the milk, which had no heat left, silently from the living room doorway. After sorting everything out and having the maid buy burn cream, Daniel noticed Nancy hadn't left yet.
