Chapter 7
THE COMEBACK OF THE REJECTED HEIR
CHAPTER SEVEN
Sawyer watched has Jerry walked away, leaving behind the young lady he had just added.
He turned to look at Sofia Dalton and she was a pretty woman, that was the definition he could give to her at first glance but then aren't they all pretty with a mind of the devil?
His mind has reflected back to his ex fiancée Catherine and how she had unceremoniously dump him like he was a piece of garbage just because he was no longer named the heir to the Johnson's Distillery.
"Hi" Josh said with a crooked smile as he turned to stare at Sawyer who knew his time in the restaurant was limited and coming to an end soon.
Maybe he would be able to tell Jerry soon after he was done with the dishes in the kitchen. He had practically being looking for different ways on how he was going to break the news of his leaving to Jerry. He guessed it won't sound so bad now if he told him.
There was an addition to the staff, maybe they wouldn't feel his absence if he quits now. At least, the new lady who just walked in would be able to replace him and maybe better based off on the confidence oozing off from her her.
"Hi!" The girl named Sofia greeted them with a smile. Her eyes wore a glint of confidence as she smiled warmly at both Sawyer and Josh. Her smile was beautiful, she had dimples on her cheeks which became more visible as she kept smiling.
"Hi!" Sawyer greeted in return.
"Welcome to our restaurant" Josh said grinning wildly at the girl. He had always wanted a new addition, well and to get rid of the person who had taken his spot. The lady standing before him was someone he can easily work with, she wouldn't overshadow him like Sawyer did.
"It's nice to meet you" Josh added, stretching forth his hands to take hers in his. She was a sight to behold and she has caught Josh eyes.
She shook his outstretched hands for the welcome handshake.
"I'm Josh. Nice meeting you again my lady" he introduced himself for the unoteenth time, still holding her hands as he threw her a flirtatious smile.
"Thank you" she said softly.
"Welcome miss Sofia" Sawyer also added. He didn't know if he should shake hands with her like Josh did.
She didn't give him enough time to think about it as her hands were already stretched in front of him. She seemed to be a friendly person.
"I'm Sawyer" he said simply, returning the gesture. After they had separated, both of them remained quiet not saying anything for few seconds as they kept looking at themselves.
"Okay...so all introduction is done here now" Jerry said, breaking the silence.
"Do you have any idea, where the boss has fixed you in?" Sawyer asked.
"I guess I just have to pick a spot I would be good at" Sofia replied with a shrug.
"Leave that to me, I will take care of it" Josh said, he threw an icy look at Sawyer marking his territory.
"Sawyer!" Jerry called, breaking the two from the staring contest that was about to start off.
"Sir," he answered, he wondered why he was been called by the boss.
"The customers loved the burgers today again. Some claimed it was more delicious than the previous ones. Weldone guys" he commended their effort but everyone knew that mostly Sawyer did all the work back in the kitchen.
Jerry didn't want to commend Sawyer alone seeing the others did contributed even if Sawyer did almost everything.
Sometimes, his culinary abilities amazed him. Who would have believed that all of his attention and practice in the kitchen on how to cook would pay off someday.
He'd never thought of using that skill of his which had been buried down, laying dormant for a while. But now, here he was working in a restaurant making burgers after he had frantically search for a job from the first time he came to the city.
"Sawyer, I need to see you in my office now" Jerry said to him.
'Why did he want to seeme ? Did I do something wrong?' Sawyer wondered and dropped what he was doing.
"Josh, I will leave Sofia to you and you can show her around on what to do" Jerry said.
"No probs dad, I'll get on with that immediately" Josh replied smiling very brightly as though he was asked to carry out a very interesting task.
"Sawyer..." Jerry called again, and Sawyer left where he was to follow his boss to his office.
*********
Jerry walked into his office to take a seat behind his very large table.
"Have a seat Sawyer" he told him.
"Sure" he mumbled and dragged the chair opposite his boss to listen to what he has to say.
" mFirst..." Jerry started. He stretched his hands to take a sheet of paper from his table and scribbled something on it. Sawyer wondered what he was writing.
Did he find out of his plan to leave and stop working in their restaurant? Why did he want to see him?
"Alright..." Jerry continued, lifting his face from the sheet of paper to stare into Sawyer's face.
"You were late this morning and that is against this restaurant policy" Jerry said, looking sternly at him. He had rushed into the restaurant in the morning looking sort of disorganized and as though he had something on his mind.
"I'm so sorry about that" Sawyer apologized for his lateness. He had overslept and the fear of Josh revealing his findings out about his identity had scared him to death.
"You told me you wanted to talk about something earlier this morning Sawyer" Jerry reminded him.
"What was it about?" Jerry asked him further.
"Well...erm..." Sawyer was speechless. He didn't know where to begin from or how to spell it out in words to his boss. What would he think of him if he called it quits when it had just been few days into his work as a staff of the restaurant or dropping halfway even after everyone commended his culinary skills.
He didn't know how his boss was going to feel. He didn't want to make the man feel sad. But, Josh was not helping matters here.
"That restaurant is my birthright! You're not better than I am, and you'll never be. Don't think you can just pop out of nowhere and become my father's favorite, while I've been working my way up to him all these years!!!
Be careful not to more more than you can chew, or else... ".
The voice of Josh and all he said to him yesterday night resounded in his head and replayed over and over again.
Very funny how he already had an enemy at his new workplace just few days into the work and it was no one else but his own boss's son.
He have no intention of making enemies with anyone especially if it has to be the son of his boss, someone who has the knowledge of who he is, someone who could destroy him within seconds if he lets the information in his hands get to the public.
"Sawyer?" Jerry called him the second time trying to get his attention.
"Ye... yes sir" Sawyer answered with a stammer.
"You weren't listening to me." Jerry stated.
"I'm sorry about that" Sawyer apologized.
"So what is it you have to tell me that was so important that you had to keep my customers waiting?" Jerry asked this time his full gaze were focused on Sawyer.
Clearing his throat, Sawyer made the conscious effort to spill it out about his resigning immediately. No need to stall or postpone it.
Wars were fighting in his mind that instant as he sat on the chair directly opposite Jerry who was eager and waiting to listen to his employee who was soon growing to be his favorite speak up.
"I.... I just..I thought to tell you ab..." he stumbled upon his words, he couldn't mutter the courage to say it no matter how hard he try. He would soon be homeless if he quits because he would have no money to pay for his rent not to talk about his fees and other necessities.
'Damn it!' he yelled from within him. Why wasn't he able to just let the words roll of his tongue at once.
Maybe it was because he knew the inconvenience that he would cause him and his restaurant once he left. And what was at risk.
'Would it be wise to just let go of it like that?' But what if Josh decided to act upon his threats? What then?
Was he going to find another one soon if he left them to source for other work? Mr. Jerry was gradually trusting him to be a good employee.
Sawyer looked up from Jerry's large table to his face. His face and the look he wore showed that he was waiting patiently and was listening with rapt attention for him to drop whatever bombshell he wanted to share.
He gave Sawyer a signal to go on.
"I just wanted to ask you to please teach me the newest recipes on those snacks you spoke about sir, that is if you don't mind…" Sawyer trailed off silently.
"Oh that's it...." Jerry said a little bit not convinced.
"You got me thinking of something else Sawyer" Jerry had noticed Sawyer's uneasiness which made him think he had a bad news to share but it turned out to be something different all much to his relief.
Sawyer decided that he was going to continue to work in the restaurant at least for a little while until he would be able to save up something for himself but for the meantime, He would try his best to ignore Josh and whatever tantrums and hardship he would throw at him.
