Chapter 13
Adelaide
Adelaide sat against the headboard, watching the sky light up. She had spent the last two days in bed, not eating. Not sleeping. She left on bad terms with Geoff and their wedding was just two weeks away, but she paused it. Her heart was still hurting, but her mind was trying to get her to understand. It was a war she had no strength in fighting in. She had been feeling sicker lately to. So much so that she spent most of last night throwing up. Was this her body telling her that she was weak? Mocking her for not being more of what her Mate would want as a woman? She remembered Chelsea, her top notch glamor from her hair to her heels. Was his past lovers the same way? Should she try harder? She glanced down at her oversized t-shirt and shorts. She hadn't changed in two days and she can smell it now.
She slowly rolled out of bed, the movement making her stomach flip and she charged the bathroom. After she emptied her stomach contents again, she hopped into the shower, hoping to wash away the dread she felt.
Mate.
"Please don't call me that." Adelaide sniffled as she washed her hair, the hot water stinging her body.
Please.
His wolf whined softly. He had been knocking on the door of her mind since she ended the conference call, but she refused to open it. She switched on the bath and laid down.
"What?" She asked as she shut off the water and sat back. As she shut her eyes, his wolf sat in the shadows of her mind, watching her.
He is a fool, but he is true to his word that he loves you.
"I know." She sniffled. "It hurts. Is it so damn hard to be faithful?" She asked him. His wolf ears laid back. This was the first time he looked so vulnerable.
In all my years as a wolf spirit, not once has any King ever relinquished their title. Until now.
"Really?" She asked him. He walked toward her before plopping down on the ground in front of her. He licked her face, taking the tears away.
He is devoted to you. More than any King before him to their Luna.
She ran her fingers over his muzzle before resting her forehead against his, shutting her eyes.
"I guess I should finish planning the wedding, huh?" She said.
I also should start communicating. I dropped contact.
Adelaide let out a soft laugh. "Did you just put him on timeout?" She asked. His wolf blew in her face. Adelaide opened her eyes, noticing Dr. Marshall sitting on her toilet. She gasped, covering her chest and crossing her legs.
"Dr. Marshall!" She screamed. The doctor passed her a towel.
"You were out for a few minutes, but you weren't asleep." She told her. Adelaide got up, quickly wrapping the towel around herself.
"I was talking to his wolf. How did you?" She asked her as she drained the bath.
"Damion let me in. Your friend said you haven't been feeling well lately." She told her as Adelaide went into her room.
"Geoff and I had a fight, that's all." She told her. She went through her wardrobe, picking out a tank top and leggings. She looked back at Doctor Marshall. "Privacy please?" She asked her, but the therapist inclined her head at her. Adelaide sighed, dropping the towel and started to get dressed.
"Adelaide , when was the last time you had your period?" She asked her. Adelaide froze, looking over to her as she put her bra on.
"My period? What does that have to do with anything?" Adelaide asked after putting on her top and slipping on her leggings. Doctor Marshall walked over to her and before Adelaide could stop her, she rested a hand on her stomach and another on her forehead. Adelaide grew dizzy and sat on the edge of her bed.
"You've been ill for some time, yet you never thought about it." Doctor Marshall said before removing her hands. Adelaide felt another wave of nausea work its way through and she bolted to the bathroom again.
"I'm stressed. I had an interview that was live on TV." Adelaide washed out her mouth. "I got bit by Elias, I had a conference call with the other Alphas." She looked back at Doctor Marshall, "I'm also in a rush in planning a wedding."
"Answer my question." She said to her. Adelaide hesitated, biting her lip as tears welled up. She was so busy with everything, how could she not notice the one thing that came once a month?
"I don't know." Adelaide told her, her tears hot on her skin. Doctor Marshall sat her down on the bed, "I don't remember. So much has been going on. I lost track." She told her. Doctor Marshall nodded before going to the doorway.
"Erica?" She called out. A rush of boots on tile ran toward the door from downstairs. "I need you to go to the pharmacy for me." She told her.
"Is she okay?" Erica peeked around her.
"I need you to pick up a pregnancy test." She told her. Erica's eyes widened. "Do not speak about this to anyone." The she-wolf told her. Erica looked over to Adelaide and gave a firm nod.
"Got it!" She said before running off.
When Erica came back, Doctor Marshall passed the test over to Adelaide . She stared down at it, still doubting that she was, but even his wolf was encouraging her to take it.
"Of course you would be happy about it." Adelaide grumbled when she sat alone in the bathroom. She sat the test on the bathroom counter, too scared to glimpse at it.
I'm the King, why wouldn't I be happy that my Queen might be carrying my pup?
He purred to her and she couldn't stop a smile setting on her lips.
"I don't think I'm ready though. And if I am, how would I even break it to Geoff?" She buried her face in her hands.
The last King I spirited, his Luna made this grand announcement in front of the entire pack.
"Like Hell I'd do that." She said, staring at the test again. "What if..." His wolf growled so loud, she almost fell into the bathtub. She stood up, stepping closer to the counter and gazed down at her results.
POSITIVE.
"Holy shit." Adelaide said as she stared at it, her bathroom door flying open and Erica swarmed her. She looked down at the test next, her eyes wide.
"No fucking way." She turned to Adelaide , grabbing her hands. "Are you okay?" She asked her. Adelaide was still staring at the test, her head still trying to wrap around it when she heard his wolf howl with joy.
"Well well, congratulations." Doctor Marshall said, a kind smile on her face. Adelaide finally pulled her eyes away and looked at Erica.
"I'm pregnant." She said softly.
"You're pregnant." Erica repeated. They held each other's gazes until Adelaide broke out into a smile.
"I'm pregnant!" She screamed and Erica hugged her tightly. Adelaide cried, but she was actually happy.
"How are you going to tell him?" Erica asked her as they all moved into the bedroom again.
