Chapter 9 An Additional Condition

Jonah chuckled. “So, you’ve come prepared. Mrs. Barkworth, what’re your thoughts on this matter?” After he finished speaking, his smile froze upon seeing Suki behind Ivanka, and he thought. “Why are they together?” Suki cleared her throat and said sheepishly once she entered the room, “Mr. Sadler, I couldn’t tell you everything about Iris earlier, because the circumstances around Iris’s work status had been unclear. However, since we’ve agreed to take up your case, we’ll lay out the facts for you.” Jonah was taken aback. He cast a glance at Ivanka, and his eyes were filled with shock. After a brief moment of silence, he said calmly, “Ms. Moore, are you telling me that the elite lawyer that I’ve gone to great lengths to hire is my rival’s wife?” The corners of Ivanka’s lips curved upward. “Ex.” Regardless of how calm and composed Jonah had been, at that moment, he could not help but cry out in shock, “Ex?!” Ivanka offered a hand to him. “Mr. Sadler, I’m Iris. Nice to meet you.” Ivanka had met Jonah as Mrs. Barkworth more than once. However, this was her first time seeing him as Iris. Jonah shook hands with her. He said with the ghost of a smile, “Ms. Iris, why did you split up with Mr. Barkworth so suddenly?” Suki smiled. “Mr. Barkworth is in love with another woman despite being married. He is naturally not worthy of Iris. Mr. Sadler, we understand that this case is extremely important to Sadler’s Group, so we’ll take it seriously. You can choose not to believe in Mr. Barkworth’s ex-wife, but you can’t question Iris’s ability.” Jonah narrowed his eyes. The next second, he chuckled. “Michael has Ivan York to help him on this case. I believe no one else can defeat Ivan aside from you, Ms. Iris.” Ivan was an elite lawyer. He had never lost in any case before. Hence, his name stirred up fear among the lawyers. He and Michael were also childhood friends. They said Ivan was the second Iris. It would be an interesting battle if the duo showed up in the same court room. This was also one of the reasons Jonah had done everything he could to make Iris his lawyer. However, things had progressed differently from what he expected. But everything had happened so coincidentally that things had become even more interesting. Suki grinned and nodded. “That’s right. Mr. Barkworth has Ivan as his attorney. He’s great, so the usual lawyer wouldn’t be able to defeat him, unless that lawyer is Iris. Since that’s the case, there’s no need to worry that Iris will act as a spy, isn’t it?” Suddenly, someone knocked on the door. “Sir, the dishes are ready. Shall we serve them now?” “Sure.” The door was pushed open, and several attendants served the dishes. The room was quiet. The only sounds available were from the plates being set on the table. After that, one of the attendants said politely, “The dishes are served. Feel free to call me if you have other requests.” Jonah nodded. The attendants then closed the door and left. Ivanka ate without hesitation. She took her cutlery and cast a quick glance at Jonah. “Mr. Sadler, if I knew you were so hospitable, I would have shown up earlier.” She had only drunk a packet of milk this morning, so she was famished. Jonah was surprised. In the past, Michael and Ivanka always showed up together, and they always looked very much in love with each other. He wondered why they would split up so suddenly. Jonah grabbed his cutlery and grinned. “Ms. Iris, do you want a drink?” “No, thanks. Drinking is harmful to the body. Mr. Sadler, I heard that you have a weak stomach. It’s best to just eat the food.” The corners of Jonah’s lips curled upward. He said ambiguously, “Ms. Iris, I didn’t expect you to be so concerned about me.” Ivanka’s hands froze for a moment. In the next moment, she gave him a perfunctory smile and continued eating. She did not say anything and just focused on eating. She ate quickly, but she did not gobble the food up, and it allowed her to always exude an air of elegance. Meanwhile, Mr. Sadler ate slowly and looked like a noble prince. As for Suki, she was not in the mood to eat. She occasionally cast a worried glance at Jonah. After Ivanka put down her cutlery, Jonah looked at her. “Ms. Iris, I have to say, I’m surprised by your behavior.” Ivanka’s lips twitched. “It’s fine. You’ll have plenty more things to be surprised in the future.” Jonah quirked an eyebrow, and he grew even more interested in Ivanka. “I look forward to it.” Suki cleared her throat. “We’ve almost finished our meal. Shall we go straight to business?” Ivanka looked at Jonah and said calmly, “I already know all the specifics. I believe we can win the case. Besides, I’m very satisfied with your offer. You don’t have to offer me anything else, but I have an additional condition.”
