Cha[ter 14 An Unexpected Visitor
There was silence on the other end of the phone.
It seemed like hesitation.
Seeing her silence, Matthew took the initiative to grab the phone, his tone carrying a hint of questioning. "If you're Sovereign, why did you leave just now?"
"Oh?"
Clara pretended to be surprised, speaking into the phone. "Mr. Garcia, didn't Ms. Baker tell you that she felt I wasn't needed here and asked me to leave?"
Lillian didn't expect her to be so straightforward, and she became agitated, denying it vehemently into the phone. "Clara, stop lying! You were the one who said you had something to do and left. I didn't kick you out!"
"Well, whatever Ms. Baker says goes."
A sigh of resignation came from Clara through the phone, making anyone feel sorry for her.
Lillian, in frustration, stomped her foot in place. Sensing Matthew's gaze upon her, she shook her head desperately. "Matthew, I really didn't do it."
Matthew, annoyed, shook off her hand pulling at his sleeve and redirected his gaze to the phone screen.
"I apologize for what happened earlier. Grandpa's condition is very serious now."
Clara, on the other end of the phone, was somewhat surprised to hear Matthew soften his tone.
But then again, it wasn't so surprising.
After all, Andrew genuinely cared for Matthew.
His concern was only natural!
"I'll come over now."
Clara hung up the phone and quickly walked toward the ward.
When she pushed open the door, the imposter who had been there before was nowhere to be found.
She couldn't be bothered to pay attention to the hostile glares from Lillian and went straight to the bedside to check the readings on the instruments.
And all of Clara's movements were observed by Matthew.
Upon seeing her skillfully manipulating the instruments to check the data, a strange anger surged in his heart.
"Mr. Andrew's condition isn't serious. This episode was due to a sudden rush of emotions, coupled with age-related issues. He fainted because of that. I'll give him a couple of shots later, and we'll discuss the surgery after he wakes up."
The CT scan of the brain showed obvious shadow compression, but according to Clara's observation, it wasn't in the advanced stage.
The reason it was discovered only now was because Andrew had served in the military when he was young and had a very good physical condition.
"Surgery?"
Matthew looked worriedly at Andrew lying on the bed, took a step closer to Clara, and his eyes still held some distrust. "If his condition isn't serious, why does he need surgery?"
Clara looked up, meeting Matthew's skeptical gaze with a raised eyebrow. "The CT scan of the brain shows obvious shadow compression, and surgery is necessary to remove it."
At this moment, William approached, his eyes revealing surprise.
"Ms. Edwards, do you intend to perform the surgery yourself?"
Clara nodded.
When she was with the Garcia family before, Andrew had taken good care of her.
This time, it was to repay the three years of support.
But she didn't expect an unexpected visitor to barge into the ward.
"I won't allow her to perform the surgery!"
Seeing who barged into the room with such force, Clara couldn't hide her irritation.
Matthew also didn't expect this person to come to the hospital, frowning as he looked at the middle-aged woman in front of him. "Mom, why are you here?"
The newcomer was Matthew's mother, Sharon Garcia.
Despite her older age, good maintenance made her look youthful. She was adorned in luxurious brand-name accessories, giving off an air of opulence. However, her full figure appeared somewhat greasy, and her eyes were sharp and shrewd, making her seem formidable and not to be trifled with.
Sharon snorted disdainfully, forcefully placing her bag on the table before sitting down on the sofa, her demeanor imposing. "If I didn't come, would you still be allowed to make a scene like this?"
Her sharp reprimand echoed in the ward.
Matthew's eyes betrayed his impatience, clearly restraining his temper. "Grandpa's affairs don't require your intervention."
"I'm your mother!" Sharon retorted, rising from her seat.
Pointing sharply in Clara's direction, she continued, "I've said it before. This woman is no good. Look at her now! For three years, she hasn't spoken a single truth. If she had revealed her true identity earlier, your grandpa wouldn't be lying in bed unable to get up!"
Clara stood expressionless in place, her gaze fixed solely on Matthew.
She had no intention of engaging with Sharon.
During her three years of marriage to Matthew, Sharon had tried to suppress her more than once.
There was even a time when Sharon had tempted someone to lock Clara in a pitch-black basement!
Had Clara not been alert and turned the tables on her, locking her up instead, things wouldn't have been so peaceful afterward.
As a result, a rift had formed between them.
"I need a quiet environment to treat Mr. Andrew."
