Chapter 13 The Fact
Matthew's eyes filled with incredulity as he spoke again to William, "Clara is Sovereign?"
Seeing the surprised expressions on the faces of the people in the room, William started to form a guess.
"So you didn't know. But Mr. Garcia, how could you not know? Aren't you and Ms. Edwards married?"
His words felt like a sharp thorn, piercing deeply into Matthew's heart, leaving him feeling uneasy.
Recalling Clara's expression just now, Matthew finally understood why she had looked so amused.
A sense of frustration welled up within him once again.
Matthew pursed his lips and spoke coldly, "We're divorced."
"Oh, I see..." William paused, feeling somewhat embarrassed, and coughed lightly to ease the awkwardness.
"That's impossible!"
Lillian's voice of doubt echoed in the room as she quickly approached Isaac and pointed at him, addressing both of them. "This is Sovereign. I've seen the medical records in his hands. Clara cannot possibly be Sovereign!"
She refused to accept this reality!
If Clara were Sovereign, there would be no place for her by Matthew's side.
Realizing this, Lillian forcefully pulled at Isaac's sleeve, her voice gaining a hint of sharpness. "Tell them that you are Sovereign!"
Isaac hadn't expected to be exposed so quickly.
He felt a sudden lack of confidence.
"I am... I am not..."
Upon listening to Isaac's hesitant response, Matthew's eyes shot a piercing coldness toward him. "David!"
David instantly understood his meaning and stepped forward with a serious expression.
Isaac swallowed nervously. "I'm not! I'm just a medical student. I heard about Sovereign's reputation, so I pretended to be her."
"I've only treated minor illnesses before. This time, Ms. Baker gave me too much to handle, so I took a risk and came over!"
Upon hearing his words, Lillian, who still held a glimmer of hope, felt her heart sink completely.
But she still refused to believe that Clara could be the renowned Sovereign!
"Even if he's fake, how could Clara be Sovereign? Matthew, if she really is Sovereign, why couldn't she detect Mr. Andrew's discomfort over the years? Was she intentionally waiting for Mr. Andrew to become seriously ill so that you would go begging to her again?"
Lillian outwardly appeared concerned as she analyzed the situation, but in reality, she continuously attempted to sow discord between Matthew and Clara.
Seeing Matthew standing still without responding, she quickly brought up a key point. "Matthew, don't forget. Clara threatened to marry you by saving Mr. Andrew in the past. Now that Mr. Andrew's condition is bad again, who knows what she's trying to blackmail you with..."
Upon noticing a glint of darkness in Matthew's eyes, Lillian's lips curved into an almost imperceptible smirk.
William, standing nearby, looked at Lillian with some confusion and said firmly, "Sovereign is not that kind of person, and certainly wouldn't resort to blackmail with medical skills."
Lillian scoffed. "But she did marry Matthew, didn't she?"
William opened his mouth, unsure of how to explain.
Deciding not to continue the argument, he took out his phone and glanced at Matthew. "I'll call Sovereign now."
Matthew's gaze locked onto William's phone, his emotions in turmoil, primarily anger.
They had been married for three years.
Why did he know nothing?
How much had Clara kept from him?
If she had such an identity, why would she willingly stay by his side for three years?
Heavy doubts filled Matthew's mind, making him eager to ask Clara what exactly was going on.
"Hello, Mr. Smith."
Clara's clear voice came through the phone, instantly quieting the room.
William glanced at Matthew, who was approaching, cleared his throat, and asked with a smile, "Ms. Edwards, are you still at the hospital? There seems to be a misunderstanding regarding Mr. Andrew. Are you aware of it?"
Upon seeing William's high regard for Clara, jealousy began to spread in Lillian's heart.
Lillian wished she could replace Clara.
On the other end of the phone, Clara sat in William's office, calmly sipping her coffee. "I'm in your office."
Upon hearing this, William breathed a sigh of relief. "Ms. Edwards, could you come to the ward now? Mr. Andrew's condition requires your diagnosis."
