Chapter 12 The Real Identity
With that in mind, Clara lowered her head and pulled out her phone, sending out a message.
After receiving William's reply, she quietly pocketed her phone and patiently waited for someone to approach.
It seemed William was unaware that Lillian had sought another Sovereign.
Standing nearby, Lillian couldn't help but sneer at Clara's indifferent demeanor. "Ms. Edwards, listening to you, it sounds like you know Sovereign? But if you really know Sovereign, you wouldn't intentionally delay finding him and risk Mr. Andrew's condition, would you?"
Whether Clara actually knew Sovereign or not, Lillian intended to leave this pitfall here and watch her fall into it herself!
Clara looked up at her and smiled faintly. "I'm not as capable as you, Ms. Baker. Sovereign hasn't appeared for three years, yet you managed to find him so easily."
A flicker of unease crossed Lillian's face as she met Clara's meaningful gaze, sensing she might be being played.
There was a lingering feeling of being manipulated.
And Matthew, standing nearby, overheard the conversation. He instinctively looked at Clara and caught a glimpse of profound meaning in her eyes, resurrecting the thought he had suppressed earlier.
"Are you..."
Before Matthew could finish his sentence, the elevator doors chimed open.
Upon seeing who emerged from inside, Lillian's face lit up with joy as she eagerly approached. "Dr. Sovereign, I'm Lillian, the one who arranged to meet you."
Sovereign?
Clara glanced in the direction of Lillian's voice, only to be met with the sight of a man with a haughty expression as if everyone owed him millions!
"Yeah, I'm here, but you know my policy. Send the final payment first." Isaac Clark sneered at Lillian, adopting a cold demeanor, while his assistant trailed behind with a medical kit.
Clara casually caught sight of Matthew's skeptical expression, growing more eager for the following.
Lillian quickly approached the man. "Dr. Sovereign, rest assured. I'll transfer the money right away. You're the real deal, unlike some people who just pretend to be skilled with a little first aid."
Even as she complimented Isaac, Lillian couldn't resist taking a dig at Clara, earning a cold glance from Clara.
Lillian's expression stiffened, hastily diverting her gaze. "Dr. Sovereign, let's go inside and take a look first."
Isaac gave a cold grunt and entered the ward expressionlessly.
Clara silently watched Lillian lead Isaac into the room, about to follow when she felt a hand grasp her wrist and pull her aside.
Looking up, she met Matthew's probing gaze. "Do you know Sovereign?"
Clara shook off his hand wordlessly, lowering her gaze to hide the coldness in her eyes. "Mr. Garcia, you just saw that Sovereign doesn't know me."
Matthew furrowed his brow and stared at her calm expression, feeling the strangeness intensify.
That man just now didn't exude any aura of a medical professional. He seemed more like one of those scammers one could meet on the street casually.
Besides... according to the information he had gathered, Sovereign was most likely a woman.
Clara met Matthew's skeptical gaze head-on, her face betraying no emotion. Catching sight of the retreating figure from the corner of her eye, she smirked derisively. "Mr. Garcia, people might think I'm intentionally bothering you."
It was clear who she meant.
Lillian shot Clara a glare and moved to grab his sleeve. "Matthew, Dr. Sovereign is inside. Let's go in first and not waste any more time out here."
Matthew evaded her outstretched hand and silently glanced at Clara before heading toward the ward.
Seeing this, Clara lifted her foot to follow, only to have her path blocked by an outstretched arm.
"Ms. Edwards, I've gotten Dr. Sovereign here. I'm sure you have other things to attend to. Why don't you go and take care of them? You don't need to worry about this."
Lillian smiled at Clara, seemingly caring.
But in reality, Lillian didn't want Andrew to wake up and see Clara, triggering thoughts of them getting back together.
She had found out that a big reason for Andrew's emotional turmoil was knowing about their divorce!
If they were to reconcile, Lillian would become the biggest joke in Halcyon Bay.
Clara sensed her inner thoughts and coldly said, "Are you sure you want me to leave now?"
Lillian smiled sweetly, her eyes warning. "Ms. Edwards, with all the chaos here, asking you to leave is for your own good. If Mr. Andrew wakes up and sees you, he might remember the reason for arguing with Matthew and get angry again."
Since Lillian had said so, Clara didn't want to force her way in.
She simply threw a casual remark and turned toward the elevator. "I hope you won't regret it."
Lillian didn't understand Clara's meaning, but as she watched Clara's retreating figure, her face twisted with scorn. She muttered under her breath, "She really thinks she's some big shot when it's just been luck all along!"
Just as she finished speaking, there was a sound from behind the door.
Matthew frowned slightly upon seeing only Lillian standing there. "Where's Clara?"
Lillian's eyes flashed with hesitation, and she sighed helplessly. "Ms. Edwards probably has other things to attend to. I saw her answer a call from a man and hurriedly leave. Matthew, do you want me to go and bring her back?"
A call from a man?
In that instant, Matthew remembered the group of people he had seen at the bar last night.
Despite his extensive network, all he knew were their names and identities, nothing more!
He glanced in the direction of the elevator and lowered his voice coldly. "No need."
He turned and went back to the ward, unaware of the fleeting joy and satisfaction in Lillian's eyes.
But as soon as they entered, William, done with his business, hurriedly arrived.
"Sorry, I'm late. Sovereign hasn't left, has she?"
William apologized profusely, then froze for a moment upon seeing the unfamiliar man standing beside Andrew's bed. "Who are you?"
Those words made everyone in the ward react differently.
A frozen smile hung on Lillian's face, unsure of how to respond.
Furrowing his brow, William glanced around the room. Not finding the person he was looking for, he turned to Matthew with a deeper furrow in his brow. "Mr. Garcia, where's Ms. Edwards?"
Clara?
Lillian's heart skipped a beat. "Mr. Smith, this is the Sovereign I found. Don't you know Sovereign?"
Isaac, standing by the bed, froze in place upon hearing Lillian's words.
Matthew, however, was more puzzled by William's sudden mention of Clara.
"Mr. Smith, why did you mention Clara?"
Upon hearing that, William's gaze turned to him in astonishment.
Then, William's voice echoed in the ward, neither loud nor soft. "Mr. Garcia, don't you know? Ms. Edwards is Sovereign."
