Chapter 2
After Evelyn put on her clothes, Jasper entered the room. Upon seeing him, she was taken aback. "I thought you had left."
Jasper remained silent. His gaze landed on the area she had slept on. On the white bedsheet, there was a red stain. The bloodstain was like a blooming azalea.
He felt complicated. It had been known to everyone that Evelyn had dated many men and slept with many men. Thus, he didn't expect her to be a virgin.
Evelyn thought he was worried she would use it as an excuse to pester him. So, she said, "Don't worry. I'm not obsessed. I won't ask for you to take the responsibility, either. I was willing to do it."
She didn't lose anything from sleeping with him. He was a handsome man, after all. Besides, his skills were superb. She had a great experience with him. It was fair.
Jasper swallowed back the words he wanted to say. A while later, he said, "Sleeping once doesn't mean anything."
Evelyn nodded. She had expected this.
Then, Jasper asked for room service, and the staff sent up a table of dishes for breakfast. It was a sumptuous meal.
Evelyn and Jasper sat at the table and had breakfast. They didn't speak at all, making the atmosphere seem strange.
When drinking the mushroom soup, Evelyn accidentally smeared the soup on the edge of her mouth. She wanted to grab the napkin to wipe her mouth, but Jasper suddenly reached out and held her chin. Then, he used his other hand to wipe away the soup with his thumb.
It was the first time they were so intimate with each other after the passionate night, and they were both wide awake. For some reason, she blushed.
"Evelyn, if you're going to pursue me, you can't pursue other men," said Jasper all of a sudden while staring at her.
Evelyn asked, "Why can't I?"
Upon hearing that, Jasper frowned. He found her question to be abrupt.
Evelyn said, "Since I'm pursuing you, I should call the shots. If I can't win you over, can't I give up and woo another man?"
Her words left Jasper speechless.
Evelyn continued, "Besides, I don't plan on pursuing you anymore."
Jasper frowned even more, and his demeanor became colder. "What did you just say?"
"I've already slept with you before I even started to pursue you. Why do I still need to win you over?" Evelyn shrugged.
Jasper laughed angrily. She was such a wench. It was expected from her.
"So, you charm a man with the aim of sleeping with him?"
Jasper, who always had his head held high, almost said something beneath his dignity like, "Even if you've slept with me, you'll never have my heart."
"That isn't it." Evelyn was a bit diffident. "It's just that you will never marry me."
"Who told you that?" Jasper asked.
This time, Evelyn was the one dumbfounded.
Although the Fowler family had a high status, they couldn't be compared to the Langston and Richmond families with a century-old foundation.
The Richmond family was wealthy and powerful, with businesses covering real estate, tourism, energy, finance, and many other fields. When the family was mentioned in Oshire, there would be an uproar.
There were many wealthy families vying for marriage with the Richmond family. The Fowler family couldn't compare to them. So, how could the Richmond family like her? Was Jasper joking around?
Evelyn put down the cutlery. "I'm full. Can you send me home?"
Jasper was angry. He knew she didn't take his words to heart. He took out a cigarette from the box and lit it. He took a smoke before saying, "I thought I met someone interesting. You should go back yourself. We aren't going in the same direction."
Evelyn grabbed her purse and got up. "You don't need to provoke me. My reputation is bad, but I have my principles. I won't be someone's mistress."
Her uncle's wife, Gretchen Fowler, forced her to get married to an old man, who was over the age of 70. She was in a hurry to get away, but she wasn't going to fly to another cage. She wanted equality. That way, Evelyn could have freedom and go after whatever she wanted.
She turned around and was about to leave the room. When she had just pulled the door open, Jasper's voice sounded from behind, "I can't promise I will marry you, but it's possible for you to be my official girlfriend."
When Evelyn heard that, she stopped in her tracks. She did need an official title, especially with a big shot like Jasper.
Only in this way could she resist the fate of being treated like a dish and given away to anyone. When she was in a relationship with Oliver, Gretchen stopped forcing her to marry the old man since the Langston family was of good status.
Now that she was dumped by Oliver, she didn't know how she should face Gretchen.
She asked Jasper to send her home just now because she had a motive. Gretchen wouldn't reprimand her if she saw them together.
"Really? If you say so, I'll take it to heart." Evelyn turned around with bright eyes. "I don't have a lot of strengths. My only strength is being loyal!"
She knew it was difficult, but since Jasper had said such a thing, she wasn't afraid of failing. She might not be experienced in pursuing others, but she was experienced in being pursued. As long as she was sincere, she could open up his heart.
Jasper got up and walked out of the room. A while later, he realized that Evelyn didn't follow him. He turned around and frowned. "Aren't you coming?"
Evelyn asked, "Are we going in the same direction now?"
Jasper remained silent. He turned around and continued to walk forward. Evelyn skipped over to him and entered the elevator. She looked cute.
Jasper's face showed little expression. He was tall and didn't speak much, making him seem like a cold iceberg. However, with Evelyn—who had a bright smile—next to him, he seemed less unapproachable.
He sent her home in a Rolls-Royce. The car arrived before the front yard. He didn't hide the fact that he was sending her home at all.
Evelyn got out of the car and thanked Jasper, "Thank you for sending me home."
"We were going in the same direction anyway."
Before Jasper finished his words, the window was already rolled up. The tinted glass hid his attractive facial features. Then, he started the engine and left.
Evelyn was still standing in the same spot. She remained polite and saw him off. She dragged herself to the door, and when she was about to change into slippers, a fierce woman's voice sounded, "You didn't come home last night. Where did you go? Who sent you home just now?"
Gretchen stood in the middle of the living hall and stared at Evelyn fiercely. Evelyn's mother passed away early, and her father wasn't very successful. He had always been relying on his younger brother, John Monroe, and Gretchen.
John and Gretchen didn't have any children. So, he shamelessly gave Evelyn to them, and in return, he received a large amount of money to spend. It was as if he was selling off his daughter.
Gretchen put in a lot of effort to raise Evelyn. She signed the latter up for a lot of extracurricular classes, including piano, cello, dance, horseback riding, golf, and others. Whatever the wealthy women knew, Evelyn had to learn it.
Everyone said that Gretchen was great because she put in a lot of effort to raise a child who wasn't her own. However, only Evelyn knew that Gretchen liked her appearance and wanted to raise her to marry her off into a wealthy family.
Because of that, Gretchen was extremely strict with Evelyn. She didn't give her free time.
"The scion of the Richmond family sent me home."
Upon hearing that, Gretchen was no longer angry. "Do you mean Jasper, who is the heir of Advent Group?"
Evelyn nodded obediently. As expected, Gretchen stopped talking about that topic. Evelyn snorted to herself.
Gretchen didn't care if Evelyn was fooling around with a man. She only cared about the man's status and whether or not he could support her career.
