Chapter 3
"Tell me what happened between you and Oliver."
"We've broken up. He brought it up first."
"Your engagement has already been announced. Do you think it's a child's play?"
"He cheated on me. Besides, that woman is pregnant with his child. It's great that he mentioned it first. I don't want to be in a relationship with him anymore."
"What a disgrace!" Gretchen cursed. It was unknown as to who she was cursing. Was she cursing Oliver for being improper, or Evelyn for being embarrassing because she could not win over a man?
The more Gretchen thought about it, the angrier she was. She walked over to Evelyn and poked the latter's temple. "Do you think you can marry into the Richmond family? Do you know who Jasper is? Do you think he will like your background?
"Let me be frank with you. You can either get back with Oliver and continue with the wedding, or you can go out and socialize again, and I'll arrange blind dates for you."
At the mention of blind dates, Evelyn shuddered. In the past, Gretchen had recommended a real estate tycoon, who was over the age of 70, to her.
Two of his previous wives had passed away, and he had more than ten children. A few of the children were around the age of Evelyn's parents. He requested Evelyn to be obedient and have high virtue from the get-go. He wanted her to serve his entire family.
He wasn't getting a wife. He was clearly getting a maid.
Evelyn even heard that although the tycoon was quite old, he was very wild in that regard. Several escorts and young celebrities had been exhausted by him in bed.
When Evelyn started to date Oliver, Gretchen thought that Oliver's family background could compare to that tycoon's. It was only then that Gretchen stopped making Evelyn go on blind dates.
Evelyn was dragged into her room by Gretchen. Once the door closed, she plopped down on her bed and pulled the cover on top of her. Two streaks of tears rolled down her cheeks silently.
She only needed some time. Just a little…
Once she received the recruitment notice from Oshire Art School, she could escape from Gretchen's grasp and move out of the house.
Evelyn pulled out her phone and saw that Oliver had spammed her with calls and messages. He probably wanted to ask why she had to hook up with his good friend.
Evelyn found him annoying, so she blocked him. On the other hand, Jasper didn't contact her at all after they exchanged contacts.
Although they had reached an agreement, she still thought he was just acting on impulse. Perhaps he had already forgotten about that matter.
So, for the following days, Evelyn didn't take the initiative to contact Jasper and didn't meet up with him. She was busy with the onboarding process.
Meanwhile, Gretchen didn't allow Evelyn to waste a lot of time. She brought the latter to socialite and business banquets.
At the banquet, Gretchen and Evelyn walked through the crowds and networked with the people there. As a beautiful woman, Evelyn became the center of attention.
Who said that appearance didn't matter? In such an environment, beauty could be exchanged for a certain value.
Throughout the entire night, Gretchen had negotiated several huge projects, while Evelyn had exchanged contacts with several people.
When the banquet was about to end, Gretchen suddenly pushed her to a building materials supplier. "Mr. Chase, I'll leave Eve in your care. If she does something wrong, please don't mind it."
"Since you're busy, I won't let you down. After Eve has enough fun, I'll send her back to your house."
No matter how slow Evelyn was, she knew what they meant. Her reputation was bad, but several people wanted to marry her and didn't care about the rumors.
In the end, she told them that she was in a relationship with Oliver so that they would back off. Thus, she had offended many people.
Now, she was dumped by Oliver before the engagement. To a certain extent, she had already lost the advantage in negotiating the marriage with the other party.
Instead of wasting her youthful appearance, it would be better to maximize her value and give her to interested big shots as an exchange of interests.
At that thought, Evelyn felt dizzy. She felt as if she had fallen into icy water. Her limbs and heart were ice cold. She couldn't believe Gretchen was so ruthless to her.
"Eve, are you tired? Do you want to take a seat there?"
Tyson Chase leaned closer to her and smiled creepily. Then, without waiting for her answer, he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and led her to a corner. It was obvious what his motive was.
They were still in the banquet hall, but he was already so impatient. Evelyn held back her disgust and was thinking of an idea to get away from him.
Once they took a seat, Tyson made a move. He placed his rough hand on Evelyn's thigh. As if she were electrocuted, she got up with a ghastly expression.
For the Monroe and Fowler families, she resisted the urge to vent her anger. "I need to use the restroom. I drank too much just now."
"Alright. Come back soon."
Tyson smiled and looked at Evelyn as if she were a lamb about to be trapped and slaughtered. She quickly walked in another direction. Actually, she didn't know where the restroom was. She just wanted to get away from him.
But she didn't expect him to follow her. A siren rang in her heart, and she started to run with her three-inch-tall heels.
Evelyn wore a fishtail dress that day. It hugged her figure and showcased her waist and hip perfectly, but it was difficult for her to run in it.
As she was worried that Tyson would catch up to her, she randomly pushed open a door to a private room. To her surprise, she was met with Oliver's gaze the moment she pushed the door open.
Oliver was sitting in the middle of the couch facing the entrance. He was smoking a cigarette while playing cards with a few people. His good friends in the same industry were sitting next to him. Evelyn knew them quite well. Aside from that, Oliver's girlfriend, Eva Dixon, was around, too.
Oliver stared at Evelyn as his body stiffened. Meanwhile, Cael Kramer, who was sitting next to Thiago Glover, noticed something off with Oliver. So, he followed Oliver's gaze and saw Evelyn as well. Immediately, he nudged Thiago, who was dealing with the cards.
"What are you doing? Do you not have enough space, or do you want to be in a relationship with me?" When Thiago raised his head, his words were stuck in his throat. It was as if he had seen a ghost.
He said, "You all were right! It has only been a few days since the breakup, but she has already come back for you."
"Oliver, she must be here for you."
When Eva saw Evelyn, her innocent face became pale. She hugged Oliver's arm tightly. She felt uneasy and terrified, looking very pitiful. Evelyn didn't do anything, but Eva acted as if she had been bullied.
Oliver withdrew his gaze and ignored Evelyn. "Are you all still going to play? Keep going."
With a pale face, Eva said weakly, "Oliver, I don't feel too good. I want to go back…"
"What's the matter? Are you feeling unwell? Do you need to go to the hospital?" Oliver's voice was gentle, and he seemed considerate.
When Thiago saw Eva's state, he couldn't help but say, "Evelyn, he's happy with Eva right now. Why are you here? Do you think you didn't do anything wrong when you were with him? Eva treats him better than you. You should stop bothering him."
Upon seeing them, Evelyn didn't even plan on entering the room. "You're overthinking. I'm just looking for someone and entered the wrong room."
Then, she stepped out calmly.
At the moment, she was more worried about Tyson. Because she was absentminded, she collided with someone when she turned around.
