Chapter 8
Emma returned to her apartment. She packed up her things as well as the divorce certificate.
She was leaving on a plane tonight.
She had already made an appointment with the best doctor at the best hospital in Feltha in preparation to welcome the baby in her womb.
If she gave birth in Bruherst, there would be too many unknown variables.
She didn't forget to send a copy of the divorce certificate and court summons to Seth.
As soon as she was done packing, Lucas called her phone at that exact moment to remind her about the gathering this afternoon.
After some more light packing, Emma made her way over.
However, what surprised her was that the venue of the gathering was a well-known nightclub in the city of Javena called the Bluebay.
Apparently, this was one of the businesses owned by the heir to the Gardner family, the most influential family in Javena.
The heir was known to have a very unpredictable temperament. Although he was operating a nightclub, he was selective about the people he allowed inside.
Thus, it became a place for the people of Javena to prove that they were of extraordinary status.
Emma and Seth were allowed to go in, but why would Lucas be somewhere like this?
Even though she was confused, she didn't overthink it. She thought that perhaps Lucas had some important friends.
After all, he was able to date her. It wouldn't be shocking if he also had some friends with very deep pockets.
Emma had already prepared herself for an awkward night, but to her surprise, Lucas' friends were extremely friendly toward her.
Not only that, but some of them even looked familiar, although Emma couldn't put a finger on their names right now.
The entire night, Lucas took great care of Emma. He even peeled fruit for her and fed it to her.
Perhaps it was the pregnancy hormones, but she was really craving something sour. Thus, Lucas peeled several oranges for her, even completely removing the pith from the fruit.
Emma had also gotten accustomed to this kind of treatment. After all, Lucas had always been this attentive and thoughtful toward her.
However, there were several mocking gazes cast her way, which made her cheeks flush.
In the middle of the gathering, Lucas came up with an excuse to leave first. He acted mysteriously, saying that there was something he was preparing.
Emma also tried to find an opportunity to leave.
She didn't tell Lucas that she was leaving today because she was worried that it'd make him sad.
As she walked out, she overheard a casual conversation between the security guards.
Apparently, the heir to the Gardner family had asked them to clear the venue as he was going to propose to the woman of his dreams.
Emma just treated this information like nothing but a piece of gossip. She thought that since the venue had to be cleared, then Lucas and his friends would have to leave soon too.
Once she landed in Feltha, she'd explain everything to him.
As she waited for a cab on the street, she heard several familiar male voices.
Almost instantly, Emma was rooted in place. Her limbs felt numb.
She never thought that she'd ever run into Seth at a palace like this.
A flurry of footsteps sounded behind her.
It sounded like there was a group of people approaching.
Not only that, but Emma could hear them whooping.
"Congratulations on the good news, June. Unfortunately, the Bluebay is chasing everyone out, so we can't even celebrate for you!"
"Exactly! We should be drinking to such great news!"
Then, Seth's warm, affectionate voice rang out. "June is pregnant now, so she can't drink. I told her that during her pregnancy, I'm going to quit smoking and drinking."
Suddenly, the group of men hollered again.
"Not bad, June! Mr. Hunter here is known for being hard to tame."
"No wonder everyone says Mr. Hunter is head-over-heels in love."
Emma instantly recognized those familiar voices as some of hers and Seth's mutual friends.
At that moment, she felt like an icy wave had washed over her.
She felt like she was floating on the boundless ocean all alone with limbs that had gone numb from the biting cold. The pain and feeling of injustice engulfed her completely.
She'd thought that she was doing a good job of hiding her failed marriage and the disgraceful truth, but it turned out that Seth had already exposed everything.
