Chapter 9
Emma quickly wiped away her falling tears.
She wasn't sad.
Rather, she was ashamed.
She gritted her teeth, wanting to go somewhere else.
She didn't want to get recognized right now. She was hoping to maintain her last bit of dignity and self-respect.
However, as soon as she took a step, June's irritating voice rang out.
"Emmy, what are you doing here? Are you here to see Seth?"
She spoke loudly, immediately drawing everyone's attention over.
Taking a deep breath, Emma turned around.
When the mutual friends who'd said those awful things earlier saw Emma, they suddenly felt a little guilty.
On the other hand, Seth remained composed. His indifferent face carried no trace of unnecessary emotion. The moment he saw Emma, his dark and depthless gaze gained a trace of ridicule.
Walking over, he immediately pulled June behind him.
Then, he asked matter-of-factly, "Why haven't you sent over the custody agreement that I asked you to sign? Do you understand the concept of time?"
There even seemed to be a hint of resentment in his tone.
As soon as Emma heard that, she laughed ruthlessly.
"Seth, how have I never noticed how thick-skinned you are? Who said I was going to sign that custody agreement?"
Seth frowned. "Then why did you come here looking for me?" he asked in annoyance.
Emma shook her head. Her gaze iced over. "I'm not here for you. I hope that this is the last time I ever see you in this lifetime."
Seeing how serious Emma was, an uneasy feeling grew within Seth. He said slowly, "The terms of the custody agreement are still up for negotiation. Emma, the baby inside June's belly will see you as its biological mother. You need to think this through."
Emma pointed at June, who was hiding behind Seth. "Well, is she okay with that?"
Of course, June wasn't. In fact, she was deathly jealous.
But she didn't have a choice.
From the corner of her eye, she saw a car approaching. Suddenly, an evil look flickered in her eyes.
"Emmy!" June screamed deliberately. "Please, I'm begging you to let me and my child live!"
Emma couldn't react in time to June pouncing on her. As her body fell backward, she heard the piercing blare of a car horn.
In an instant, her face turned pale, and she understood what was happening.
Her survival instinct made her grab June, pulling her down with her.
However, what everyone else saw was Emma yanking June toward the speeding car.
Seth was the one standing closest to them. His eyes widened, and he rapidly made a choice.
He pushed Emma aside and pulled June into his arms.
Emma's eyes grew wide; Seth's actions sent chills down her back.
For June, he was willing to watch her die in front of him.
Perhaps her time was not up yet, because the car screeched to a stop several feet away from her.
In an attempt to protect the baby growing inside of her, she broke her fall with her arm.
An intense pain shot up her arm, making cold sweat bead on her forehead.
However, she didn't so much as grunt in pain.
With an ashen face, she stared at Seth and June. The last glimmer of hope inside her heart died at that moment.
Once Seth confirmed that June was fine, he sighed in relief.
Glancing down at Emma on the ground, he gnashed his teeth and spat, "Emma, I never knew you could be this vile.
"You have two options. Either you hand over the signed custody agreement tomorrow, or I tell the Burton family that you're infertile.
"You're the one who forced my hand!"
With that, he carried June in his arms like a princess and strode away.
Emma, who was still sprawled across the ground, suddenly barked out a laugh.
However, her laughter sounded resigned, and her gaze was defeated.
The driver got down from the car and helped her up. "Let me take you to the hospital, miss," he said with worry.
Emma shook her head.
At this point, she didn't even have the energy to shed any tears. "There's no need. I have a plane to catch…" she muttered weakly.
