Chapter 6
Meanwhile, Seth was helping June fasten her seatbelt in the car. Yet, for some reason, he was panicking.
The way Emma had looked at him when they parted ways at the hospital kept surfacing in his mind.
She no longer looked at him with sadness, but with numbness and detachment.
In the 20-something years that they'd known each other, it was the first time she had ever looked at him like that.
However, Seth didn't feel like he'd done anything wrong.
If the Burton family hadn't crossed the line, he wouldn't be treating Emma like this.
He would never allow her to give birth to a child who had both his and the Burton family's blood.
While Seth was lost in his thoughts, June stared at the passenger seat. "Seth, now that I'm pregnant and suffering from morning sickness, won't you let me ride shotgun?" she asked coquettishly.
There was blatant greed in her eyes. However, when she looked at Seth, her gaze became pure and innocent again.
Seth smiled warmly, but his gaze was chilling. "June, don't cross the line. The passenger seat is only for my wife; I can give you anything you want except for that title."
June was frightened by the coldness in the depths of Seth's eyes. When she came back to her senses, she couldn't help but feel that it was unfair.
If Seth didn't love Emma, then why did he want to keep her? Why was he refusing to divorce her?
However, she didn't dare to voice her dissatisfaction.
Changing the subject, she frowned in concern at Seth. "Actually, I'm really worried. I don't want our baby to be an illegitimate child with no proper name or status.
"It seems like Emmy really hates me and the baby. What if she refuses to acknowledge the baby as hers?"
She blinked her eyes, and the waterworks began. Seeing her crying face, Seth's heart ached for her.
He wiped away her tears and said confidently, "She will acknowledge the baby as hers. The Burton family's inheritance is about to be divided. If she doesn't want to walk away with nothing, she has no other choice."
June then asked tentatively, "What if she divorces you now—"
Before she could finish her sentence, Seth interrupted her. "That's impossible."
In an urgent but resolute voice, he said, "She would never divorce me."
Suddenly, their wedding day flashed in his memories. Emma had stood at the altar in a gorgeous white dress. She had been beaming at him. With a blush on her face, she had gazed at him with radiant adoration in her eyes.
Seth's tone softened as he emphasized one more time, "She would never divorce me."
A look of dissatisfaction flickered in June's eyes, but she had to pretend to be pleased to hear that. "That's good, then."
When Emma got home, she happened to receive the custody agreement that Seth had sent over the phone.
He had ignored her unwillingness and was now forcing her.
"Print two copies of this. You have to sign one copy, then leave the other copy on my office desk by tomorrow," his message read.
Afterward, he even added, "I'll find the time to have a meal with you this weekend."
When Emma finished reading the text, she laughed out loud.
Since when was Seth the kind of person to hurt her and then offer her an olive branch?
It sounded like he was lowering himself to graciously have a meal with her, but it was only because of the baby in June's belly.
Since the two of them loved each other so much, she was going to do what was best for them.
Since she had her own baby now, Seth was ultimately useless to her.
Without a moment of hesitation, she exited the chat and blocked Seth.
At that moment, Lucas walked out in an apron with a freshly cooked dish in his hands.
Like a well-behaved golden retriever, he bounded toward her with sparkling eyes. His flawless face was close to hers as he presented the food in his hands like it was a priceless treasure. "Try this, Emma. I specially made this for you."
Well, about Lucas…
It seemed like there was no need to drag him into this mess as well.
