I watched until he was completely out of sight, a sense of emptiness settling in my chest. “I’ll miss him,” I whispered to myself.
Baron stepped closer, his warmth enveloping me. “It's not like he's going to disappear, you know. He's right there, a territory away. Besides, the road trip shouldn't take even as long as two days. If you need him, you know you can go at least halfway.”
“Why halfway?” I raised my eyebrows in confusion.
“Because I’m barely going to let you out of my sight,” he said. “But really, he’ll be fine. You’ll be fine. He’s right there; he’s not going anywhere. And besides, you’ve got me.”
“I suppose I’ll have to make do,” I teased softly, glancing up at him.
His expression softened, and he cupped my cheek gently, his thumb brushing over my skin. “It’s good to have you back, love. I thought I’d lost you out there.”
I leaned into his touch, closing my eyes briefly. “You didn’t lose me. We didn’t lose each other.”
