She had a ringing in her ears that almost sounded like music. The next thing she heard was her own breathing, ragged and uneven. She huffed and sucked in air over and over again. Fingers jabbed at her face, accompanied by words she couldn’t hear.
Sticks and stones, they said.
She wasn’t hurt, but she was pissed.
Eventually, the sounds stopped. Everything rushed into her mind like a torrent, filling her brain with too much stimulus at once.
She winced, shutting her eyes as her hands balled into fists. Her anger was rising to an all-time high.
“You—” Her voice cracked, then rose, trembling with fury. “You cowards! You traitors! How dare you sit there and judge me after everything I’ve done? I fought for you! I bled for you! And this—this is how you repay me?”
Erion, ever stoic, folded his arms across his chest. “It’s because of your actions that we’re in this position, Celine. You’ve brought us nothing but ruin. We can’t allow you to lead us any longer.”
