“Wait a minute!” I stopped Edith. “My mother-in-law gave me some chicken, so you can make a stew from it. Put the other things in the refrigerator.”
“Yes, ma’am.” Edith took a chicken from Lee and went to the kitchen.
There were another two live chickens and ducks. I didn’t know what to do with them, so I got someone to tidy up the backyard and set aside a piece of land to raise these four birds. I didn’t want my mother-in-law to think that I didn’t appreciate her gift.
Edith added fresh mushrooms to the chicken stew. The chicken was cubed perfectly into an easy-to-eat size, and the aroma was enticing.
“Edith, it’s delicious! Your daughter is so lucky to be eating such great food every day.” I took a bite and praised her sincerely.
“My daughter has been a picky eater since she was a baby, so I put a lot of thought into getting her to eat more. She’s still skinny because she wants to maintain her figure.” Edith had a doting gaze when she talked about her daughter.
