The wind whipped through my hair as I urged my horse faster, the hooves pounding against the earth in a rhythmic, almost hypnotic beat. I had to move quickly, put as much distance between myself and the pack as possible.
Luca might have been fooled by my act, but I couldn’t risk anyone else catching on. Not now, not when everything was so close to falling into place.
As I rode through the dense forest, a prickling sensation crawled up the back of my neck. Someone was following me—I could feel it. I glanced over my shoulder, trying to catch a glimpse of whoever was on my trail, but the trees blurred together in a dizzying rush of green and brown. There was no one there, at least not that I could see. But I knew better than to trust my eyes alone. Instincts didn’t lie, and mine were screaming at me that I wasn’t alone.
