They all understood the unspoken but very loud skepticism heavily etched on the doctor's face when he told them there was still a chance that Madison would wake up, even though it was slim.
"She's not brain-dead yet, and her heartbeat is stable for now; all we can do is wait," were his final words before he turned to walk back to his office. "I think I'm about to faint," Isabella muttered. Her legs felt like mush, and her mind was reeling from a lot of thoughts.
She couldn't lose Madi; she was practically her sister now, and she didn't want to imagine a life where she would have to take flowers to her grave. She shivered slightly at the thought. A small voice in her head asked the one question she had so desperately been avoiding: "What if she never wakes up but never stops breathing either?"
"No! No!!" Isabella yelled as her knees finally gave under her; luckily, Luke managed to catch her before she fully sank onto the cold white floors of the hospital.
