CHAPTER FOUR HUNDRED AND NINETY ONE – THE COMPETITION
As they put the final touches on their cake, Jasmine stepped back to survey their work. Despite the setback, or perhaps because of it, their cake looked stunning. The exposed layers showed off the beautiful colors and textures of each tier, while Lola's delicate sugar work - featuring miniature replicas of Trujillo's famous sites - added an elegant touch.
"Time's up! Step away from your creations!" the announcer called.
Jasmine and Lola exchanged tired but triumphant smiles. They had done it. Against all odds, they had created something beautiful.
The judging seemed to take forever. Jasmine and Lola waited anxiously, watching as the judges made their way around the room, tasting and evaluating each entry. Finally, after what felt like hours, the judges gathered to make their decision.
"In third place," the head judge announced, "we have María Gonzales with her beautiful 'Fruits of Trujillo' cake."
Jasmine squeezed Lola's hand tightly as they waited for the next announcement.
